Data Parallelism for Training LLMs - Destra Decentralized GPU Network The most important use case for the Destra Decentralized GPU Network is the training of large language models (LLMs). We recognize how the accessibility to GPU power is bottlenecking the exponential advancements in LLMs. Currently, only large corporations with deep pockets can afford the most powerful GPU clusters needed to train their LLMs. This barrier to accessing GPU power is creating monopolies in the LLM space. No one is able to point fingers when these companies flip switches, like OpenAI's transition from a not-for-profit, open-source organization to a closed-source company owned by Microsoft. After witnessing what these Large Language Models can achieve, it is concerning to know that the best of these models are owned by greedy corporations. The sky is the limit for them, they can weaponize these LLMs from targeting product sales to potentially influencing the democratic elections of nations. We are building the Destra GPU network with a vision to solve this: democratize and distribute the GPU power to everyone. The Destra Decentralized GPU Network enables anyone to train their LLMs on large datasets without the exorbitant setup costs associated with centralized cloud GPUs. As part of this vision, we are announcing the Data Parallelism Architecture of Destra GPU Network. In this, the training data is distributed across multiple GPU nodes available on the Destra GPU Network. Each GPU node trains a copy of the model using the portion of the dataset assigned to it. After each training cycle, all the model weights across the GPU nodes on the Destra Network are synchronized. Destra GPU Network uses a Gradient Averaging mechanism to synchronize the models disturbed across different GPU nodes on the network. Following is a brief overview of the synchronization architecture: 1. Distribution of Data: The training data is divided into batches and distributed across multiple GPU nodes on the Destra GPU Network. Each node trains its own model replica on the batch of data it receives. 2. Local Gradient Computation: Each node independently computes the gradients of the loss function with respect to the model parameters. This computation is based on the subset of data available to that GPU node. 3. Gradient Averaging: After computing the local gradients, nodes broadcast their computed gradients to other nodes within the network. These gradients are then averaged across all nodes. 4. Update Model Parameters: The averaged gradient is then used to update the model parameters. This means that each node adjusts its parameters in a way that reflects the average of the updates suggested by all nodes, thus synchronizing the model across different nodes. 5. Iteration: This process is repeated across multiple iterations, progressively refining the model with the entire dataset. We are building the Destra GPU Network, to adhere to the 100% decentralization ethos, we strongly believe in. With this decentralized GPU Network, we at Destra Labs, are aiming to level the playing field for individuals like researchers, developers, and small-scaled startups, to promote innovation and ethical use of Artificial Intelligence.
