My coworker has cerebral palsy and a speech impediment. He’s 24, works in mailroom. One day he comes back from lunch smiling: “They invited me to sit with them.” I was pissed. Last month the same group made fun of his speech during a meeting. I went to the cafeteria early to catch them in the act. Found him at their table. One guy pushed his coffee over and said, “We saved you the seat with the back support. You were wincing yesterday.” Another had printed out the meeting notes in bigger font “so you don’t have to squint.” They were asking him about his favorite games, actually listening while he typed answers on his phone. Turns out one of them has a younger brother with the same condition. “Didn’t realize how much it sucks to be left out,” he told me later. Now they eat together every day. He told me last week: “For the first time, work doesn’t feel like a place I have to survive.”
