About three years ago, my uncle bought an abandoned house in a small town outside Columbus, Ohio for just under half its market value.
Even the realtor looked surprised that someone actually wanted it.
The lawn was waist-high.
The windows were covered in dust.
The front porch leaned just enough to make you question whether it would survive another winter.
Every neighbor had the same reaction.
"You're really buying that place?"
One older man across the street shook his head and said,
"Nobody stays there long."
My uncle just smiled.
"It's only a house," he replied.
"Houses don't scare me."
He planned to renovate it himself and either rent it out or sell it.
He thought the biggest challenge would be replacing the roof.
He couldn't have been more wrong.
