Friends often ask me for NYC neighborhood recommendations. But once you add multiple jobs, roommates, or a partner, it gets hard to tell what's convenient and what's not. So I built a tool to help with this. Check it out and let me know what you think! (link below)

@Colin_d_m I think last time I wondered why this is the way it is, the answer I found was that it's mostly extra capacity for diesel trains to outer branches since they can only turn so many of them around at Jamaica and they won't run them into the underground terminals.

The Long Island City stub stations are a weird leftover from before East Side Access. They should close the two stations and open a new one for LIRR trains heading to Penn Station.

After seeing several snowed-in stations last week, I put together a quick site with a best guess at whether a given Citibike dock is working or not based on GBFS showing how often available docks change: doesmydock.work

nytimes.com/2025/08/03/opi… The most interesting thing here is the Amex private club in Manhattan. That's more like a third space — actually an interesting concept/revival. Airport lounges are silly. Get to the airport close to your flight, not to hang out in the airport.

@StatisticUrban So bizarre to me that a county in PA is considered part of the NYC metro. The closest point in that county is 2 hrs from Lower Manhattan by car and 3 hrs by train

Harris had such massive declines in many of the country's largest metros (e.g. Boston, NYC) that Madison and Durham have snuck onto the list of the top 5 bluest metros.

@JoserNunez91 I’m assuming Neil Pierre has been on the bench enough to be supplemental at this point too.

This is where things currently stand roster-wise (I believe, feel free to correct me, as I’m pulling this together on the fly between work meetings): Gazdag's DP spot remains open Nelson Pierre has been sold Olney Jr. has been loaned out One thought: could Glavinovich be added to the season-ending injury list? I’m not sure there’s a clear timeline for his return. For the record, I’m not hoping for this — just pointing out a possibility that could free up a roster spot. #doop #MLS #USMNT #USYMNT

The Secondary Transfer Window opens tomorrow--July 24 through August 21. It’ll be fascinating to see what the club does, especially given their current position: third in the East, just one point off the top spot, and still very much alive in the U.S. Open Cup with a quarterfinal match on the horizon. #doop #MLS #USMNT #USYMNT 📷: Carl Gulbish (@carlgulbishpho1) and Philadelphia Union

@whipsmash Curious if you think the cage-like balconies fit this analysis too, or are something different?

I wrote about Taiwan’s infamous rooftop add-ons: those janky tin sheds stacked on buildings. They’re more than just eyesores; they’re personal, political, and quietly ingenious when formal planning falls short. (Yes, my uncle has one. No, don’t snitch.) tinyurl.com/4k3ncefz

@meyerpolanco I think it’s just a weird politician thing. I definitely have seen Hakeem Jeffries do a whole speech like this

They only placed these blocks on the west side of the street. This won't prevent the NYPD from accessing the parking space they've been occupying for years.

The NYPD has placed large cement blocks by the Tillary Street entrance to the Brooklyn Bridge. It's unclear what they're trying to accomplish but they've obstructed the bike lane and crosswalk. @NYC_DOT @CMRestler @StreetsblogNYC

The truth about congestion pricing - the majority of people who live here like it. And it’s only outsiders who have turned this into a political Left vs Right, Trump vs democrats issues that are against this youtube.com/watch?v=sKXht3…

@StatisticUrban Is Williams even running? Or are people just assuming that if he becomes mayor in the event of Adams being removed he will just decide to run then?

Great thread — the US planned a comprehensive subway system, built it, and got the promised ridership. And then we never did it again. Every US city that has a busy subway network ought to be planning the next set of lines — and none really are.
