Translational researcher, nephrologist, and head of the Oregon Clinical & Translational Institute. I am naturally skeptical, but always open to reason.

The doctor of the future will prescribe heavy lifting, whole foods, high protein, clean drinking water & 10,000 steps a day.

We are heartbroken to announce that Prof (Stephen) Ben Walsh, died peacefully on 30th Sept while surrounded by family & friends. Both his family & @RenalUCL are raising funds to find a way to honour his memory and achievements. More info below: justgiving.com/page/in-memory… Ben's passion for science & medicine was an integral part of who he was. And after self-diagnosing with lung cancer 18 months ago, he decided keep his condition private to protect his clinical and academic work. Remarkably Ben continued to work throughout his illness, right to the very end, ensuring that his students, colleagues and patients were taken care of, and that all he had built would continue on. There are no words to really express the profound sadness we feel, the loss of a dear friend, colleague and mentor. He will leave a very large hole in our lives and he will not be forgotten. Details of funeral/memorial services will be made available in due course. We're also requesting anyone with pictures or videos of Ben to upload these to the Google Photos or Dropbox links below. We've also attached a link to a Google Doc for messages of condolence you may wish to leave for the family. @ItaiYanai I think very differently. Discovery, mentoring, teaching, the success of my students, and many other things are far more rewarding for me. Also, I place more confidence in my (and community's) evaluation of a research article than in journals. blog.slavovlab.net/2014/12/17/exc…

That's why we see the same protein often involved in very different processes in different contexts, interacting with different partners in different molecular networks or pathways...

As the editorialists @SofiaAhmedMD and @VictoriaRiehlT noted, let’s do better for our patients and give them more choices for managing chronic kidney failure. annals.org/aim/article/do… (my first tweet thread - hope I did it right)

Two recent developments confuse me rounding in hospital; every house officer now has their water bottle at all times (see pix) and when did all caregivers start wearing scrubs 24/7?

@dhekidney What’s confusing about wanting to be hydrated and dressing appropriately for the hospital?
