@KevinH_PhD True, but seems to me fruits/nuts definitions make sense from a science point of view but clash with popular notions, while the UPF situation is the reverse

Many people are confused by what foods are ultra-processed and argue about the definition. But definitions in nutrition are sometimes odd. Just look up what vegetables are actually fruits, what fruits are actually berries, and what nuts are actually fruits or legumes.

@fossilrabbit Not sure what year you're getting your info from. Here's what the AHA says about it in 2023.

@dhfreedman Your article on nutrition in Newsweek was so 2016. You missed the boat on red meat - shown to be fine and the most nutritious food on earth. Also, saturated fat - so much good research. Even AHA said years ago sat fat no longer a nutrient of concern.

@shelley_bean60 @Newsweek True! The big problem with the early studies wasn't that the observed prescription addiction rates were far off. It was that the studies were tiny & weak, & didn't consider potential misuse with widespread opioids

@Newsweek @dhfreedman Ty for shining a light on how difficult it's become for patients needing opioids Some discrepancies. It was mentioned that 1980s opioid studies "were badly flawed &...discredited" yet all other stats in article support those early studies 👉🏽 addiction IS extremely low, 1% - 3%!

@ScepticalDoctor I don't feel like the problem is a denial of an expert consensus on the question of diet, it's a willingness-and often an eagerness-to discount it. Some of the most popular voices in nutrition make a virtue of it

I think the most salient single philosophical difference between liberals and conservatives is the amount of power they assign to “will” as opposed to “systems/structures.” Will can be individual or collective.

@AlanLevinovitz Sadly, the right has co-opted will (~ AKA personal responsibility) as a complete explanation for everything that's right & wrong in the world, while the left has marginalized it as a pernicious myth used by corporations & government to avoid blame.

Add this to the mountain of academic & everyday evidence that $ & other simple external incentives work. Astonishing that some academic psychologists still make careers of finding ways to "disprove" it, bc intrinsic motivation seems nicer
Ethan Mollick@emollick

We know incentive pay boosts performance at jobs, but do bonuses also work for complex & non-routine tasks as well? This experiment using escape rooms(!) finds that being given a small bonus for solving the room quickly actually doubles the chance people escape in 45 minutes.

@jimstewartson Sure, the story echoes everything you say, & also it's fascist propaganda. Don’t your followers know they need you to tell them when a message is a critical truth, & when the exact same message is an evil lie bc it wasn’t you saying it? You tell 'em, Jim!

Amazingly, there is confusion about my intention here. The threat of white nationalist violence is an emergency and needs to be addressed immediately or we may in fact lose our democracy. I’ve been, uh, clear about that. This is about Newsweek USING that threat as propaganda.

In downplaying my article, gun-industry mag BearingArms says no armed uprising in ‘24, unless Biden tries a Big Steal—which 75% of R’s say he did in ‘20. & I don’t hear libs saying they’ll grab their guns if CNN claims a Trump steal. bearingarms.com/tomknighton/20…

Read past headline, folks. Nothing in article on planned insurrection. Says if Trump tells fans to hit streets to stop ‘24 “steal,” a small % responding w legal guns = millions swarming DC/state Capitols newsweek.com/2021/12/31/mil…

@dhfreedman @AnnieGranny8246 "50m Rs" own guns? You're joking, right? I'm sure it's a lot more than that. Doesn't your article say at least twice as many Republicans as Democrats own them? Then that would be over 66 million.

Pushback fr right on my article. OK, “seize power” headline a bit much. But: If Trump loses in ‘24 & calls on u to come out to defend democracy vs a 2nd big steal, will u? Will u bring a legally carried gun? Maybe? If so, I got it right. newsweek.com/2021/12/31/mil…

@BarryKaplanUSMC You're half-right, Barry--the part about keeping quiet if you don't know what you're talking about. Just kidding, always happy to educate on guns. It was a Smith & Wesson M&P 15. Colt still owns the exclusive rights to call a rifle an AR-15.

@dhfreedman Here's a clue - it's not "an AR-15 style rifle", it's an AR-15... Don't discuss the subject if you can't take the time to at least learn the terminology. And let's not forget the nationwide fires and attacks against Republicans when Trump beat Hillary.

@AnnieGranny8246 100? >2k R’s in Capitol mob (600 nabbed, 300 sought). 50m R’s say mob defended democracy, 35m say violence needed to do it. R Sen.s & Rep.s say guns for defending it. 50m Rs own guns. 75m R’s say ‘20 election stolen. But I'm sure your fam is lovely.

@dhfreedman There’s maybe a hundred wacky people who might think this is a good idea. In my Republican family (about 70 of us) everybody goes to work & has no time for crazy fever dream schemes.

Thanks @CharlesCMann for documenting how lazily dishonest that stupid, dangerous story is. Being stubbornly unworried about Covid is different than being oblivious to &/or falsely denying what's happening around you. A lie is not a point of view.

This Atlantic article says nobody thinks about COVID in the author's small town. I wondered if that were really true. I live in a small town, and plenty of people think about it. theatlantic.com/ideas/archive/…

@luxidecker Just heard from my brother-in-law there. A mass of downed branches, but otherwise they're pretty fine, no terrible damage. Power is out pretty much everywhere around there. I know some were hit harder there with flooding & trees.
