#CalicoPrinting is carefully accomplished in these stages - Craftspersons carve designs on the blocks, wash/dye the fabric, stretch it on a table, stamp the blocks dipped in vegetable colors, even gold & silver onto the fabric, & lastly, treat the printed fabric. #CraftsOfJammu


#Samba has been the hub of #CalicoPrinting & was bestowed with the moniker of 'Sheeton wala Sheher' or 'City of Sheets'. It is said that #MaharajaRanjitSingh had invited the traditional craftspersons to Amritsar, however, they chose to stay & enrich the legacy. #CraftsOfJammu


#Calico fabric originated in Calicut in 11th Century. With global exposure from 15th Century onwards, it became a popular & important part of Indian #Exports. In some parts of the world, Calico is still a fabric, while others use it to refer to the printed design #CraftsOfJammu


Dextrous & delicate block printing tradition, prominently practised in #Jammu region through generations. It is done on handwoven cotton fabrics, often coarse, using wooden blocks, local dyes and vegetable colors to produce extremely aesthetic patterns and designs #CraftsOfJammu
