Everyone sit down and relax. The amount of AI enhancement in this video is ridiculous. If you see the actual station it is not surrounded by these overly romanticised sceneries. This mega project was a distraction when China was at the height of Covid lockdown. It is a means to absorb China’s infrastructure overcapacity and a distraction for peasants domestically and useful idiots internationally. Chongqing has an annual traveller volume of only 500M people. This is handled by four existing train stations, one major international airport and four regional airports. This isn’t counting river ports, motorways, etc. Also the actual train station is much less impressive than the glamour AI enhancements suggest. This is a vanity product to showcase a communist regime that at the time of the project was locking down its people for covid. Stop promoting this nonsense. Communism is evil! Stop getting distracted because they present you a new shiny object that’s not even that new and shiny without AI enhancements!

🇨🇳 China built a 1.22M square metre train station on top of a mountain for $7.8B in just 38 months. The roof alone weighed 16,500 tonnes. They assembled it on flat ground, then hydraulically lifted the entire thing 57 metres into the air.

Another Chinese showboat mega project that will have very limited impact. 94% of Chinese high speed rail lines operate at a loss never mind depreciating the cost for this mega project. Also China likes building high speed rail lines far from city centres often next to an airport. When the stations are this far and this bag they make no commercial sense compared to flying for mid to long range destinations. In my personal experiences, mega rail stations such as this is a nightmare, because of its sheer size and the incredibly poor bureaucratic attitude of the workers (unlike airlines there is zero competition in the rail space). While I always applaud efficiency, China often skips critical planning steps. Plenty of stupid HSR stations that are vain projects not accounting for weather, functionality, and practicality.

These buildings aren’t necessarily more comfortable or convenient. They were built for a different time—a time when staff was much cheaper. I have both the wealth and the house, so I know what I am talking about. My house is market value c120M USD. I can run it with 13 full time staff and a few third party contractors. Building materials is a 1.6T USD per annum industry. Just the improvement in insulation, sound proofing, plumbing in the last 30 years have made quantum leaps. You don’t think there are significant improvements in terms of the comfort and convenience since these grand estates were built 300 years ago? It’s too costly to rebuild them in their exact likeness today. However if you live in these actual houses, which I have personally experienced many in Uk, France, and Italy, they’re incredibly uncomfortable. There is a musty feeling about the whole place which is charming to visit but awful to live. Given the way these houses are designed to run the properly you would be looking at running 100+ staff yet still fixing house all the time. Also as western countries become more woke, Joe Public will inevitably wonder onto your property and such behaviour has nearly become acceptable. Also why pay for the upkeep of a house with 20 bedrooms you don’t need? Also how many people host balls in their gallery in today’s world? Also in the heydays of these estates, the privileged wealthy stayed at the homes of others. Not as common anymore as there are plenty of luxury hotel options. Also the wealthy today have much more places to allocate budget for upkeep. In those days people had a primary estate and maybe a smaller secondary estate. Today we have boats, planes, summer and winter holiday homes. No need to lock up all of your money into one grand old house of a bygone era.
