Are Musa Mseleku and his family getting ready to call it quits? Much like the phasing out of Showmax, where Multichoice - Canal Plus, quietly cut the broadcast break time between the app and its DStv channel Mzansi Magic, seems like they are doing it again with Uthando Nes'thembu. While one is inclined to believe that the popularity of the show is behind the bombardment of screentime suddenly awarded to the Uthando Nes'thembu... "Give the people what they want" ... It is also a bit puzzling as to why there is a need to wrap everything up so meticulously. I mean why the extension when you can save some of the content for next season? Sijageleni to fit everything on this season. The show is popular, yes. But, lest we forget that the new guard at Randburg, or France, is making some drastic changes. The show's ratings are strong. Not as gigantic as they were in the early seasons, but big. However, ratings aren't everything that keeps a show on air. Production costs and profitability are also factors. If it is not making money, it will be canned. The other factor is talent participation. If a show works with a specific cast, when one or two of the core cast decides that they don't want to do the show anymore, that can also end the show. I am not saying Uthando Nes'thembu is getting cancelled. Nor do I have a solid reason at this point to believe it is. However, there is something strange about these extensions. The last time they were generous like this, Showmax was on its was out. Is it because the show is such a big hit and a moneymaker that they need to keep it on air longer for the media sales team to keep selling those spots? Or ... Are we seeing a situation where the broadcaster is giving the show more time to wrap up the uMzumbe drama as there will be no chance to return?. Only time will tell. I mean Inimba got an extension too. 😉
