At the dialogue on Women in Local Leadership and the Prevention of Election-Related Violence, Hajia Safia Mohammed, Deputy National Women’s Organizer of the New Patriotic Party, emphasized the need for stronger, targeted protection systems to safeguard women who step into politics. She further noted that the clergy and religious leaders have a critical role to play in transforming societal attitudes, urging them to actively champion and encourage women’s participation in political leadership rather than remain on the sidelines.

Freshly released, a new publication titled "Long Road to the Top" written by our own Dr Naila Salihu and Mrs Afua Lamptey. This paper examines women’s political participation and representation in Ghana against the backdrop of the historic election of the country’s first female Vice President, Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang. The paper highlights persistent gender disparities in governance and examines how existing commitments and policy frameworks on women’s empowerment can be translated into more tangible, sustainable outcomes within Ghana’s democratic processes. A must read this weekend! Download a copy here kaiptc.org/kaiptc.../long…

This election cycle exposed how unsafe politics remains for women. Women candidates and activists were targeted with gendered election-related violence, harassment and unlawful arrests. As part of the women of Uganda, we call out these atrocities in our joint statement. #EndGBV

Join us on Tuesday, November 4, 2025, from 9 AM to 12 PM (GMT) for a public seminar on “The State of Democracy in Africa.” Over the last decade, democratic backsliding has become a major threat to citizen voice, participation, and stability across Africa. This trend calls for a deeper understanding of factors that drive backsliding and those that enable democratic renewal. Drawing on research and lessons from Ghana, Kenya, Mali, Zimbabwe, and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), the discussion will explore key trends and drivers shaping democracy across the continent. CDD-Ghana is organizing the event in collaboration with the Africa Growth Initiative at @BrookingsInst. The seminar streams live on the Center's YouTube and Facebook pages. #DemocracyInAfrica #Inclusion #Accountability @DanielleResnick @OpenSociety
