@CarlosODonell @stephentyrone Yes! It’s also SO FAST to empty a small drawer, making dealing with dishes feel so much more lightweight. And while one drawer is washing, you can pile into the second one without needing to pile in the sink. SO AMAZING 🤩

@dianam @stephentyrone Yes! It allows for more "strategy" than I ever thought possible :-) Between hand washing some things, washing up after dinner, or splitting heavily soiled vs. somewhat clean (with distinct settings). Leaving it on super ECO mode in one tub which runs off-peak is common for us.

@posco I believe that’s true for those cases, but not all models need to meet a high standard of transparency. Even sharing loss and some info on features is better imo than nothing, when a model has a big impact on society and public discourse.

@dianam I only saw the ads click prediction models there years ago and since then fraud at Stripe, and now video ranking at Netflix. In my experience, none of those algorithms would be very enlightening if open sourced.

I am confused if Musk doesn't understand how modern ML works (i.e. it is mostly about the input data), or if he is just engaging in PR when he says "open source the algorithm". I can't imagine it is the former, but maybe? How do you open source an ML pipeline like that?

@posco Haha that’s true. He also said that our biggest threat is robots taking over, and it’s just around the corner (paraphrase), which always confused me, because most ppl that actually understand ML find that to be absurd. 🤷♀️

@dianam Also, he has said crazy things like “we will have self driving cars better than humans next year” then “we’ll it turns out that’s really hard, almost as hard as general AI”. Ya think, Elon? Hard to square that if he is both honest AND understands ML very well.

@posco I don’t work at Twitter so not sure about this, but I bet their algo has plenty of hand-engineered features and components that make it more explainable than a single giant neural net taking in only unstructured input. I like the idea of adding more transparency than zero 🙂

@dianam Yeah but like what good would that do? We use this giant neural net and this loss function, and here are the (as of last week) feature vectors. But I guess it sounds good to folks who (not you) don’t know how ML works.
