@ucihajime @JaneSmi59961167 the people jumping me in my replies keep bringing up that its an /archive/ but are forgetting the second part of the website name, being “of our own”. i just think that people are allowed to take back any contributions they make at their own discretion, idk why thats so crazy

@dianarmys @JaneSmi59961167 that does make sense now that u mention it. def odd but it’s none of my business imo it’s not a big deal if a fic taken down. like sure archive is in the name but it’s just another website for posting ur work. nobody would gaf this much if a fic was taken down on wattpad or smth

I am consistently confused by people treating Archive of Our Own as a regular algorithmic social media site, to the point that they delete fics when they decide to move fandoms. Its your work to do what you want with, but why publish on an ARCHIVE with no intent of archival.

@ucihajime @JaneSmi59961167 i believe there are people that try to “game” the system by falsifying update dates, but i agree that actual fic takedowns usually have largely personal reasons and somehow that’s a crime against the “archive” — because apparently works should be preserved no matter the cost 🙃

@JaneSmi59961167 ive literally never heard of anyone treating ao3 like an algorithm site tho?? 😭😭 most ppl who take down their fics just dont want anyone reading it anymore. im sure if ppl are posting on ao3 theyre aware of orphaning, creating a new pseud, and posting it anonymously

Ppl can be disappointed it was deleted, it’s perfectly reasonable.

@dianarmys @JaneSmi59961167 The word choice here is kind of wild, it’s one thing to say nobody is ENTITLED to someone else’s work in perpetuity but idk what “deserving” has to do with anything. Also, posting work to a public archive does entail perpetuity…the wayback machine holds many deleted fics.

This policy was lobbied by Nestle so that American women are forced to buy formula and don't rely on their own breast milk to feed their babies.
