Funny enough you must be a Cameroonian to understand. This is the “problem” with Mboko. You really can’t understand if you’re not mboko. But next to makossa it’s one of the most original forms of music from Africa. So artists who jump on trends and sing amapiano when it’s booming, afrobeats when it’s booming etc. Will get more listens, more recognition and more awards than mboko artists. But when you listen to the wordplay the bars the melody the message all wrapped in 1 for a mboko song. Real ones always nod a couple times.

This is not about Jovi. When we hear mboko we always try to associate it with Jovi but No. Jovi pioneered mboko for sure but mboko existed before (through lapiro) and will exist after him. Here is a 12 hour playlist of mboko rap made in Cameroon by Cameroonians for Cameroonians. There are legendary songs here but which song in here has had international recognition? That’s what I’m talking about. It’s not about Jovi. Jovi is an exceptional musician that’s not up for debate. It’s about the peculiarities of mboko that end up being a limiting factor to its exposure.
