Regular reminder that extreme poverty has fallen hugely in recent decades and has never been this low in human history! Even after the short increase due to Covid, the improving trend recovered quickly: devinit.org/resources/pove…

@BachmannRudi Strange. I don't know of any university where you need to be immatriculated to defend your thesis (usually, there is a maximum period that you can be immatriculated as a PhD student, but some PhD students take substantially longer)... It doesn't sound like the full story

A stark warning this week, shared at the UN: The status quo in Gaza is at risk of becoming permanent. A future where 2 million Palestinians are trapped in displacement, despair and endless war is not security for anyone. Israelis and Palestinians both deserve a path beyond Hamas rule and Israeli occupation – before this nightmare hardens into a picture of the future. reuters.com/world/middle-e…

Dan Perry’s (@perry_dan) warning is worth reading: Ben-Gvir isn’t some fringe sideshow. He’s the product of years of extremism, dehumanization and permanent occupation being normalized inside Israeli politics. The cruelty on display in the flotilla video was a glimpse of where this movement is taking Israel. As American Jews, we need to fight against this and work with Israelis who are seeking a different future. forward.com/opinion/826963…

The latest OWID Brief newsletter is out on Substack! It delivers all our recent work plus curated highlights from across Our World in Data, right to your inbox twice a month. This edition: Our new population projections tool, childhood stunting, China’s electricity growth, and much more. In each edition we also share some of what our team has been reading lately. This time: an updated career guide from the nonprofit 80,000 Hours, and an FT article by John Burn-Murdoch where he makes the case that smartphones and digital media play a role in falling fertility rates.

Great chart on how little a role income taxes play and how large a role payroll taxes play for most Americans. From a wonderful old post by @M_C_Klein on what a populist tax cut might look like. ftalphaville.ft.com/2017/05/04/218…

Further narrative violations: Zoomers are making higher salaries for their age, even when adjusted for inflation, than any generation before. And Zoomers are buying houses at a rate FASTER than Millennials did at the same age. The sky is not falling.

What the cameras caught Ben Gvir doing to the flotilla activists is only the tip of the iceberg. Behind closed doors, far from any cameras, he and his prison guards inflict far worse on Palestinian prisoners — a hundred thousand times over.

If you only count the progressive taxes the U.S. levies, then the U.S. system is quite progressive. But if you also count regressive taxes (payroll taxes, sales taxes, etc), it's not very progressive.
Jeff Bezos@JeffBezos

Yes, the United States has the most progressive tax system in the world. The top 1% pay 40% of taxes, the bottom 50% pay 3% of taxes. We can make it even more progressive by zeroing out taxes on the bottom half. It’s a small amount of the total tax revenue but very meaningful to people in this group.
