Before the Transatlantic Slave Trade, West African Societies thrived. They had rulers, councils, laws, sophisticated trade networks, and vibrant societies that were innovative. African History didn’t start with chains; it started with people, their stories and their strength.

Much of what we know about the Transatlantic slave trade has been taught in fragments, stripped of context and softened over time. Unwritten Histories is an 8-week series exploring what was left out, life before capture, and the legacies that followed.

Our founder visited the Nigerian Modernism exhibition @Tate Modern in London and was blown away! Over 250 works by 50+ artists show how Nigerian creators blended tradition with modernism. On till May 10, 2026 and this visit is worth every moment!

For centuries, Africans have been forced to live in stories written for them. It is time to break those narratives, reclaim our histories and tell our own truths, loud, unapologetic and unafraid of who we are.

In Nubian & Sahelian towns, homes follow land & life: thick walls keep cool, courtyards gather families. Djenné Mosque & Hausa spaces show Africa’s architecture balances people, culture & climate. Old designs, smart solutions, still inspire 2025.

Many people have been taught to fear the crossroads, to see it as something dark or dangerous. In African cosmology, it is the opposite. It carries spiritual weight because decisions made there shape one’s destiny and purpose.

It’s outrageous that we once called our traditional medicine “primitive.” Colonial powers sold us a lie that erased our wisdom and healing systems rooted in observation, experience, and community care. It’s time to reclaim and honour our heritage.

As Africans, we have become part of a movement for decolonization by celebrating our roots, honouring our ancestors, and reshaping the narratives that were given to us about our identity.

Honestly, are we going to sit back and let others define our story? We need to take control. Africa is full of creative talent in music, film, art, storytelling and beyond! Take Afrobeats in Nigeria, and the Film industry in South Africa!!

We’re sure you’ve been confused seeing Lagos drivers with shrine-looking dashboards. But these dashboards carry a deeper meaning. Many drivers see them as ancestral protection, a source of luck, loyalty to a football team and even a way to guide passengers.

Did you know that the tribal marks many Africans condemn actually carry a deeper meaning linked to our culture and marking a focal point of our identity? Do you still see people with tribal marks today? What's your belief on tribal marks? Share your knowledge in the comments.

Technology can save memory but it also comforts forgetfulness. This week, pick one family story, record it, write it, capture it, before it slips away. Preservation is about moments, not devices. Oh, and don't forget to back up your ICloud 😉
