Upper-middle-class families are in a weird dead zone with college. They make too much to qualify for meaningful financial aid, but not enough to casually write $100,000 checks every year without it completely changing their life. So the kid looks rich on paper, gets little help, and the parents are expected to absorb the cost of a house down payment every single year. College pricing has also obviously become absurd.

This is not a problem. Really. Reading and writing are not fundamental, intrinsic human skills. Telling stories, arguing about values, and conveying information are. Reading and writing were the most convenient medium for doing so for about 600 years. That’s changed. Memorizing poetry, discussing in the agora, theater, dance, telling stories by the fire, arguing with an old book for 12 hours a day were all the most convenient mediums at various points in time, in various places. The content will remain, while the medium will change. This is normal.
