We need to bring back “dipsomaniac” instead of alcoholic and “hydrophobia” for rabies.

@dissproportion Hey I had a random thought about your tweets today when I was reading a thread about people's hobbies and someone mentioned reading vintage self-help books. Did you ever start doing that project where you'd adopt the diets in old books? (I think this was you at least?)

Welcome to my baking tutorial! Step one, use unsalted butter. If you use salted butter, you're an amateur. An animal. Less than human. I'm furious at you for even owning salted butter. Step two, add salt.

@MattOsterndorf I used to live in a neighborhood with a family of four down the street, and two singletons of the same approximate age nearby, and my two kids were never happier or easier.

On our fourth(?) date/weekend together, Ourania and I looked up literature on complication rates in pregnancy as a function of body fat % to assuage her concerns about having kids

it’s smoking. high schools in America still had designated smoking sections. teens would smoke, their parents would smoke. it was inescapable.

@fendigaid @DukeHerndon Just look at any 1970s high school yearbook photo. There’s definitely something in the water making kids age differently nowadays.

@Duderichy I’ve noticed about ~15% of the time I have bad anxiety which I normally don’t have at all, lasting a week or more. But that’s usually only if I really overdo it, which I generally don’t. And a couple glasses of wine makes it go away. 😁

A method called “baby-led weaning” has recently caught on among many parents, Olga Khazan wrote in 2025. Its proponents claim that infants don’t need to be spoon-fed baby food—in fact, they don’t need to be spoon-fed anything. theatln.tc/KRS3EiKV But as Khazan spoke with baby-feeding experts—and tried baby-led weaning with her then-six-month-old son—she learned that the method has less evidence behind it than its supporters claim.

Why are they saying this “recently caught on”? This was big 15 years ago. Do we have to recycle all parenting trends forever and ever?
