The day I got promoted, my boss called me into his office.
I expected congratulations.
Instead, he handed me an envelope and said: "Read this when you get home."
I didn't understand why.
Inside the envelope was a list.
Just five names. No explanation. No message. Just five names.
One of them shocked me.
It was the name of a colleague I couldn't stand.
We argued often. Disagreed on almost everything.
And I was sure he didn't like me either.
The next morning, I asked my boss what the list meant.
He said: "Those are the people who helped you get here."
I laughed.
Then pointed at that colleague's name.
"Not him."
"We barely get along."
My boss smiled.
Then he asked: "Who challenged your ideas the most?"
I knew the answer immediately.
Him.
Every proposal. Every presentation. Every plan. He always found flaws.
And I hated it.
My boss nodded.
Then said: "He forced you to think deeper."
"He made your work better."
"He helped you grow."
That's when I realised something.
