It is with deep sadness and reflection that I have learned of the passing of Hon. Abubakar Zein Abubakar. Abubakar Zein was a quiet and towering figure in Kenya’s long march toward constitutionalism and social justice. As a scholar, educator, and politician, he dedicated his life to the pursuit of a more equitable society. As a Commissioner of the Constitution of Kenya Review Commission (CKRC), he fought tirelessly for constitutional reforms that placed the sovereignty and rights of ordinary citizens at the center of governance. His service in the East African Legislative Assembly (EALA) demonstrated his unwavering commitment to Pan-African unity and regional justice. He was a rare breed of a politician, one who elevated public discourse through performing arts, intellect, humility, and an unyielding moral compass. We have lost a patriot, a human rights champion, and a gentle giant of reform. I extend my heartfelt condolences to his family and friends. May his legacy of integrity continue to inspire generations of change makers.

The growing use of paid goons and the misuse of security agencies to intimidate political opponents is a grave threat to Kenya's constitutional democracy and the rule of law. Security agencies must protect the people, not facilitate political thuggery. Those who planned, financed, enabled, and executed the attack on UGM and Linda Mwananchi team in Keumbu on Friday must be brought to book. One person died, and several others were seriously injured. In Nyamira, today, I urged our young people to reject politicians who seek to exploit them as instruments of violence. Interior CS Kipchumba Murkomen and IG Police Douglas Kanja should step down to allow for independent investigations into the attack and the rising trend of political violence.

I visited Davis Lichuma at Nairobi Women Hospital today. He’s not able to talk. You don’t need to be told what he’s gone through. His frequent tremors when asleep, most likely “post traumatic stress disorders” (PTSDs), tells it all. Davis has been tortured. This is not acceptable and those behind it must be held accountable. We cannot be a nation that tortures, maims and kills its youth just because they seek good governance.

I was at Mathare today. When the state arrests a citizen and cannot account for where he is, we have crossed a line that no democracy can afford to ignore. I stand with Davis Lichuma's family.
