This Women’s History Month, we remember Mechtild Harf, the woman whose fight against leukemia helped inspire the founding of DKMS. ❤️ When Mechtild needed a bone marrow transplant, the German registry had only 3,000 donors. Determined to change that, her husband, Peter Harf, founded DKMS in 1991 with her physician, Dr. Gerhard Ehninger. In just one year, the registry grew to 68,000 donors. Although Mechtild did not survive, she asked Peter to promise one thing before she passed: never stop fighting until every patient has a chance to find a matching donor.
