New preprint off the press arxiv.org/abs/2410.16178 with my former UROP student James Chen who is now doing Part III at Cambridge. In it we introduce an effective way to compute _all_ inverses of Stieltjes transforms which come up in free probability.

Is the Inverse Symbolic Calculator broken? On wayback.cecm.sfu.ca/projects/ISC/I… I looked up 0.5773502691896258 and it gave no meaningful results. The answer is 1/sqrt(3).

@SamCMaths By recasting it as a first order system can’t you write the solution explicitly in terms of the first column of a matrix exponential?

Maths twitter question: is there a name for the solution of the (nth order, homogenous, linear) ODE y^(n) -y = 0 with y(0)=1 and y^(m)(0) = 0 for all 1<m\leq n

@StefanKarpinski I like it in principle as it makes it easier to focus on one task. I use it occasionally, as an on/off switch. But the execution is dreadful: when you click on something that’s meant to be a pop-up window it usually hides everything you actually want to see

@StefanKarpinski Alan’s talk was on growth rates of constants in Gaussian elimination and Cleve interjected with some historical reflections on Wilkinson. (He had also just finished his own talk during which he had not so subtly told Alan to “shut up” when asked a question by him…)
