After nearly 20 years of supply the last of our produce to leave the farm for Lidl GB. Won’t miss waiting round for wagons to turn up but a bit of an emotional day nonetheless.
@whamsfarm Onwards and upwards. Maybe I’ll go back into it in the future but want to take time away from it and explore other things etc. excited for the future and glad to be out of it to be honest
@DannyMilazzo Too much risk, not enough reward. The assets can make more reliable money being rented out and I can earn a more stable income doing something else without the hassle of weather, staff etc etc. losing 70 acre of crop in December frosts made the penny drop. It’s not worth it
Catalogue now available for @dlgrowers Lancashire on Thursday 4th May. Auction sale of tractors, self-propelled harvesters and sprayers, implements and machinery. Viewing on Wednesday 3rd May. Follow the link for the online catalogue - bit.ly/3H9fRHS
@crjohnson1988@LidlGB Lost a lot of crop in the December frosts. Price agreed for next season which wasn’t a bad price but needed more support after this year. Previous years of price cuts haven’t helped at all. More opportunities in exploring other ventures
@entubao@whamsfarm Field will be scheduled to be replanted again with lettuce. A lot of lettuce land will have 2 or 3 crops on per season depending on the variety, otherwise you’d need to rent even more land to grow the same amount if you just left it.
@whamsfarm Anyways, why not if it goes to "waste" at the end, use it as cover crop and leave it on land as green manure :? It could be the start of a regenerative project. Just saying
@PieterSlootdorp@Alastair_TWS We have had very bad weather here in recent years. 2017, 2019 and 2020 all very bad. This year been luckier with the weather. Also comes down to good drainage which needs improving a lot in our area. On rented ground it’s hard.
@dlgrowers@Alastair_TWS Nice machine and this system of Asalift originates from this area. However they choose here to harvest by hand . Furthermore I think that it all starts with good tiling and timing..
Koplsnijden is toch een aparte tak van sport als het stiekem toch weer nat is geworden. Zo te zien moet er teminste één iemand op gebak trakteren. #kettingstrak
@EhrsTommy Last year was the first year we used it. Wasn’t as good as manual harvesting but we have made some changes this year to make it better. We can’t get enough labour to cut manually so this is the only option otherwise they stay in the field
@DannyMilazzo All down to the weed burden. Stale seedbed makes weed control so much easier. Sprayer wheelings put in with gps and planter tractor goes down the same wheelings. Leave two rows unplanted next to each sprayer wheeling to make a larger tramline.
@dlgrowers So pretty much a stale seedbed kind of idea and low cultivation to conserve moisture in the ground ? What about the wheelings left from the sprayer spraying the field off did you take them out before planting
Post planting on the 8th of July vs today. Bit scary planting into all the weed but the glyphosate did its job 👍🏼 Need a top dressing now which we usually place in row however with all the rain looks more likely that we are going to have to broadcast some Nitrabor using tramlines
@DannyMilazzo Ground power harrowed probably 4/5 weeks before planting, sprayed off a week or so before planting and just planted with our normal module planter. Didn’t cultivate again or strip till.
