Actually, melanin does affect reflectivity in infrared wavelengths like 850 nm and 905 nm where lidar tends to operate, though not as much as in visible light. Lower reflectivity means lidar needs to get closer to detect them. Furthermore, since lidar outputs infrared intensity, and in some cases even visible RGB color, it can in fact physically "see race".

Careful reporting by Kelsey here. Atlantic should correct and apologize. Waymo uses lidar. It *literally* does not see race.

@fpv_labs You can also do a combination of continuous time and discrete time approaches. It's often sufficient to use a first order approximation to "de-warp" the distorted features using velocity estimates from VIO or even just IMU. Later loop closures won't affect it too much.

We are publishing our second deep dive today as a follow-up post on SLAM and VIO in egocentric tracking. We go deep into the sensor tradeoffs b/w global shutter and rolling shutter and their implications on SLAM / VIO - specifically how the way the camera reads each frame can introduce significant tracking errors before our SLAM pipeline even starts processing. We break down why global shutter is the obvious fix but the wrong default, the physics of why rolling shutter dominates every consumer device, and where the fundamental limits lie.

Each laser pulse can register both the nearest surface and a second surface behind it, separating foreground obstructions from the actual target This matters in environments with semi-transparent obscurants: dust, rain, fog, or physical barriers like chain-link fencing A single-return system sees only the strongest reflection. Dual-return provides both the strongest and second strongest returns, allowing perception software to distinguish the obstruction from the object behind it
