The press release says the link was found in an investigation by legal bloggers & "once discovered, the history of the name did not sit comfortably with members & staff". Odd that no one in the set was aware of its own history before now - a quick glance at wiki tells you.

Having "discovered" that @hardwickelaw is named after the 18th century lord chancellor (Lord Hardwicke) who co-authored the 1729 Yorke-Talbot opinion which provided a legal justification for slavery, the set is changing its name to Gatehouse Chambers.

@MartinKusch A UK version of this (Times I think) also mentioned a man in England who was recently strangled by his pet 8 foot python (named Tiny). So as nightmares go, not too bad.

#NAIDOC2021 Proud to have some indigenous ancestry in my mix. Here’s my beloved grandpa, with Dad. Dad has spilled something down his front! My third child looks extremely like Dad (he’s about the same age as in this photo). Genetics is weird.

@gifford_head @HonSocGraysInn Also, streets often got renamed. (More trivia: Lord B 1st planned to take title as Lord Chr "Vaux" - friends said he would be "Vaux et praeterea nihil". Point being that becoming L.C. cut him off from political power (wh was why he was offered it).

@gifford_head @HonSocGraysInn I'd be amazed if some of the various Brougham Streets didn't predate Lord B's death - since he was famous in politics around 1832 and lived till 1867.

People think prose comp is a useless exercise, but think what it teaches you. If you set Churchill for translation into Latin and someone renders 'an Iron Curtain has descended across Europe' as 'they've built the most beautiful wall', you know which student to watch.

@DrJEBall @romanarchaeouk No doubt, at least to some degree, because people had to rely on informal networks to facilitate correspondence.

@MartinKusch So many bonnie buildings (+ photos thereof), so many weird house names. In this case, I believe a "rebus" from the name of an early owner?

@MartinKusch @Helenreflects Very nice! Sometimes I find Dowland recordings a bit offputtingly "art-y" (my taste deficit I dare say) but I think you manage to convey the genuine feeling in the piece.

Some months ago, Helen De Cruz (@Helenreflects) invited me to join her in doing music together (across the globe). I am so glad she did! We had lots of fun. Here is the result. (Please ignore the many imperfections in the singing.) youtube.com/watch?v=iGdRD-…
