World News: Interpol has officially removed a red notice against environmental activist Paul Watson, founder of the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society.
Some shit you should know before you read: If you’re unaware, Paul Watson is a Canadian-American activist who founded the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society, an organization dedicated to protecting marine wildlife (especially whales) from unlawful hunting. Sea Shepherd is known for its brazy tactics, often intercepting whaling vessels on the open seas to disrupt their operations. These interventions have included blocking harpoons with their ships, immobilizing propellers, boarding vessels, and deploying stink bombs/smoke canisters to impair crew operations. Their high-seas confrontations gained mainstream attention through the reality television series Whale Wars, which was a hit on Animal Planet. Watson has argued that the group’s actions are justified because they enforced international conservation laws where governments failed to act. Japan has maintained that its whaling operations (which have ended) were for “scientific purposes,” and has accused Watson and his group of being criminals & “eco-pirates.”
What’s going on now: In a notable development, Interpol officially ordered the removal of Watson’s red notice, effectively lifting his designation as one of Interpol’s most-wanted. Initially issued in 2012 at Japan’s request, the red notice served as a global alert for Watson’s arrest pending extradition over a 2010 high-seas incident involving a Japanese whaling vessel.
According to Interpol, the decision was based on various factors, including the disproportionate nature of the charges, the considerable passage of time since the incident, and the refusal by multiple countries to extradite him. Sea Shepherd President Lamya Essemlali welcomed the decision, calling it “good news,” but warned that Watson’s freedom of movement remains restricted. She noted that the Japanese arrest warrant still stands, meaning Watson could still be detained in any country willing to cooperate with Japan’s request.
No comment from the Japanese government yet.
