PRESIDENCY REFUTES VIRAL REPORT OF PLANS TO CHANGE NIGERIA NAME, ABOLISH SHARIA LAW AS FALSE AND FAKE NEWS BY DUBIOUS POLITICIANS
The Presidency has reacted to a viral fake report which claims President Bola Tinubu seeks to carry out constitutional amendments that will change Nigeria's name to the United States of Nigeria and abolish Sharia Law in the Northern region as false in its entirety as the President has no such plan. A statement by Bayo Onanuga Special Adviser to the President, Information & Strategy says the story, which cited anonymous sources, is part of the dubious plot by some desperate politicians to create disaffection in the country, stir up a political crisis, and heat the polity ahead of the general elections.
It asks Nigerians to ignore the viral story in its entirety as the purveyors of the fake news are agents of destabilisation and merchants of disorder.
It adds, President Tinubu has no plan whatsoever to send any bill code-named Project True Federation to the National Assembly by December 15, a few weeks before the general election.
Under the Nigerian laws, it says, "constitutional changes and amendments are serious business that require legislative scrutiny, oversight and serious debate. The process of amending the constitution is not at the President's or the National Assembly's whim. It is a task that requires a 2/3 majority in both chambers of the National Assembly and the concurrence of 24 State Houses of Assembly.
President Tinubu is focused on the arduous task of entrenching and deepening the economic reforms his administration has embarked upon. He is focused on delivering more tangible dividends to Nigerians.
It warns Nigerians to be wary of consuming fake and divisive reports, which will proliferate as the nation begins political campaigns, a prelude to the general elections in January 2026.

Abuja: Court Nullifies INEC Pre-Election Guidelines
The federal high court Abuja division has nullified guidelines issued by the Independent National Electoral Commission directing political parties to submit their membership registers and databases by may 10 as a condition for participation in the 2027 general election.
Justice Mohammed Garba Umar gave the order in a verdict on a suit instituted by the youth party challenging the legality of the electoral body’s directive. Justice Umar held that INEC could not lawfully shorten the timeline already provided under section 29 sub-section 1 of the electoral act, 2026 for the submission of party membership records and candidates’ particulars.
The court maintained that political parties are only required by law to submit the personal particulars of their candidates not later than 120 days before the date of an election.
Arising from this, the court declared that inec as a defendant in the matter cannot lawfully abridge or limit that statutory period by prescribing a shorter time frame in its pre-election guidelines ahead 2027 election.
The court ruled that all registered political parties have until September 2026 to submit updated membership registers.
It ruled that INEC exceeded its statutory powers by imposing timelines that conflict with provisions of the electoral act, 2026.
INEC had earlier fixed January 16, 2027 for the conduct of the presidential and national assembly elections, while governorship and state houses of assembly elections are scheduled for February 6, 2027.

I commend the @ndlea_nigeria and its operatives for the successful dismantling of a major drug syndicate and a multi-million dollar narcotics production network operating within our country.
The seizure of illicit drugs and chemicals valued at over $360 million, alongside the arrest of key foreign and local collaborators, sends a clear message that Nigeria will not yield its future to criminal networks and narco traffickers.
West Africa is increasingly becoming a major corridor in the global narcotics trade, and this poses a direct threat not just to our security, but to the future of our young people. We must confront this danger with courage, coordination, and consistency.
I urge Nigerians to support our law enforcement agencies by remaining vigilant and reporting suspicious activities within their communities.
I commend the NDLEA for its professionalism, bravery, and resilience. The fight against illicit drugs is a fight for the soul, safety, and future of our nation.
