@LaurenceOsborn @l_dunn1 Musicians are fragile creatures and to be singled out of the group can be horrifying. You can feel each repetition become more timid as she spirals downward, acutely aware of all the highly trained ears/minds sensing every weakness.

@l_dunn1 Maybe I’m reading cues wrong here but this seems a bit scary but basically fine? He’s looking for a v specific kind of articulation which he eventually gets, prob a bit stressful for the player but he seems to be fairly respectful to her too?

Ligeti was known to be demanding in rehearsal but this really is striking footage – he stands in front of the conductor Reinbert de Leeuw and micromanages a single musician in front of the whole ensemble. there is a reason why it is frowned upon for composers to do this!

Elevator To The Gallows (1958) score was composed and performed by Miles Davis in a one session recording while he watched a screening of the film. He took notes while watching the rough cut and then invited 4 fellow musicians without preparation to record it in one go. Genius.

RIP. I got play with Otis a few times back in college when he hired my band to be his backup band. Great guy and a good singer in his own right.
