You don’t need drugs to feel good or beat stress. A good run, whether a kilometer or a marathon, is enough to clear the cobwebs & achieve a natural feeling of euphoria & enthusiasm. Try it, you won’t regret it. Let’s start running for a drug free J&K.

@jburnmurdoch For @jburnmurdoch to say that this is ‘an astonishing achievement’ with data based upon 6,000 Americans is astounding and overstated. I am for sure intrigued, but that is as far as I would take it for now.

NEW: we may have passed peak obesity 🎉📈📉🙏 In what might be one of the most significant trends I have ever charted, the US obesity rate fell last year.

@jburnmurdoch My take is this data is not compelling enough to suggest ‘we may have passed peak obesity’ or that GLP-1 drugs are ‘highly likely’ to be behind this data.

@jburnmurdoch Also for NHANES Aug 2021–Aug 2023, oversampling by race, Hispanic origin, and income was eliminated to reduce number of households needed to be screened; meaning the data is not as representative as in past years - was to avoid having to survey as many households as before.

@jburnmurdoch The prevalence of severe obesity in adults was 9.4%, and higher in adults ages 20–39 (9.5%) and 40–59 (12.0%) than in adults age 60 and older (6.6%). Strikingly, the prevalence of severe obesity in men (6.7%) was much lower than in women (12.1%) overall and for each age group.

@jburnmurdoch Indeed, the rate of severe obesity has also increased from 7.7% to 9.7% in 2021-2023 cycle, but with a smaller and more steady standard error of 0.7%.

@jburnmurdoch For the 2017-2020 data, % rate of obesity in the sample was 41.9%, with a standard error for the sample of 1.2%, with 95% confidence interval for the population mean lies somewhere between 39.5% and 44.3% for 2017-2020 data.

@jburnmurdoch Figure 4 notes trend in obesity derives from a similar sample size for all survey cycles from 2013-2014, to 2021-2023. Rate of obesity has increased from 37.7% to 41.9% in 2017-2020 cycle, and now down to 40.3% in 2021-2023, but so has standard error from 0.9% right up to 1.9%.

@jburnmurdoch A deeper dive notes total population sampled was <6,000 individuals, from 15 counties. Whilst the sample % rate of obesity was 40.3%, the standard error was 1.9%, meaning the 95% confidence interval for the population mean lies between 36.6% and 44.0% for 2021-2023 data.

@jburnmurdoch I am compelled to write here, regarding last week’s publication from the CDC on Obesity and Severe Obesity Prevalence in Adults. The article in the FT from @jburnmurdoch [who was just terrific on twitter during the Covid pandemic] is misleading and potentially dangerous.

Google Maps should have a feature showing ERs in NYC with the shortest wait time/boarding time.

Today is the last day of my 50’s… Tomorrow I turn 60. It’s been a wonderful journey so far… So many beautiful, incredible things have happened to me. I’ve played my music to thousands of people around the world in the most stunning venues, worked with some of the world’s most acclaimed artists, orchestras, film directors and human beings. As a performer, I’ve played, and mostly sold out, everywhere from The Royal Albert Hall to Sydney Opera House, The Hollywood Bowl and Glastonbury’s main stage. I’ve chaired and sat on the boards of many charitable organisations for creatives and spent decades dedicated to furthering my craft for myself and gladly helping others in their own work. I’ve been graciously and so kindly acknowledged by many international institutions, with awards, doctorates, honours and critical praise. I’ve even come through a recent heart attack feeling fantastic again. It’s been mind-blowing, to be honest. I’ve loved every second. How could I not? I’m so lucky. So please understand and believe my sincerity when I tell you… I’d trade it all for the return of just one of the thousands of children’s lives taken in Gaza… because each of those kids was deprived of all the opportunities I’ve been blessed with. We all deserve a chance to live a beautiful life.

The evidence for the broad health effects of GLP1 drugs keeps getting better and better They appear to dramatically improve sleep apnea, a common and serious problem that is associated with obesity Though preliminary, I suspect the results will hold up statnews.com/2024/04/17/eli…

@ashishkjha Of course they will hold up. We have this information from three decades of bariatric surgery studies. GLP-1 meds elicit similar physiological responses to bariatric surgery. GLP-1s will impact cardiovascular, hepatic, renal, pulmonary, and musculoskeletal systems for sure.

I don’t think we have fully come to terms with the fact that in our lifetimes there will be an injection people take every few months and literally no more obesity for those who can afford it. Price will drop more & more. My friend @docaggarwal thinks micro meals will be a thing. I’m convinced Fast Food chains will just die.

@chrissyfarr @docaggarwal ... if anything, on GLP-1 it feels less important to select "healthy" food. The motivation based on weight loss disappears. More likely it will be restaurants & food businesses based on the vague notion that "healthy" -> weight loss that will suffer from decreased demand.
