10 Reasons Maslow Comes Before Bloom 1.Safety comes before learning. Students who do not feel physically or emotionally safe cannot fully access reasoning, memory, or problem solving. 2.Basic needs affect attention. Hunger, fatigue, illness, and discomfort make focus and engagement very difficult. 3.Regulation comes before cognition. A dysregulated brain struggles to think, remember, and learn effectively. 4.Relationships create readiness. Students learn best from adults they trust and feel connected to. 5.Behavior often reflects unmet needs. Many challenging behaviors are signals of stress, frustration, or anxiety rather than defiance. 6.Calm brains learn better. Executive functioning, attention, and working memory work best when the nervous system is calm. 7.Confidence influences effort. Students who feel capable and valued are more willing to try and persist. 8.Stress and trauma reduce capacity. High stress levels interfere with concentration, memory, and problem solving. 9.Belonging increases motivation. When students feel they matter and are part of a community, engagement improves. 10.Supporting the whole child improves learning.
