The history nerd in me wishes that Nolan had made an Odyssey that felt like it was taking place in the late Bronze Age Mediterranean, but it's clear from all of his creative choices that he went for the fantasy movie version instead. Which was his choice. I just hope it's good.

I do want to remind everyone that Christopher Nolan is responsible for the most rightwing major studio film of all the time, The Dark Knight Rises. So perhaps we should wait to see The Odyssey before all making up our minds about it.

Troy was so good. But you have to realize people at the time thought this was a B movie. The Lord of the Rings movies had just come out. Gladiator was only a few years old. Pirates of the Caribbean was the year before. We just thought movies would be good forever.

Penelope is the equal to Odysseus, otherwise she would have not been able to hold her own for twenty years. Otherwise she would not have waited for him, and he would not have married her in the first place.
She is every bit as crafty as he is, and is meant to be his parallel. I think this comes through in the original tale.
She’s also modest and patient. It’s an error to box her into more modern gender roles, whether that is trad or feminist.
