Bass Reeves (1838 - 1910) was a formerly enslaved man who rose to become the first Black Deputy U.S. Marshal west of the Mississippi River. He is credited with making more than 3,000 arrests during his career. Reeves also killed 14 outlaws in self-defense, but preferred to bring criminals in alive whenever possible to face trial.

Arkansas unveiled a new bronze bust honoring WWII hero and former Lt. Governor Maurice “Footsie” Britt. The Carlisle native was the first American to earn all the Army’s top awards in one war. The bust will stand on the Capitol’s second floor near the Lt. Governor’s office.
