Doug Beattie MLA: I am not in the internal loop regarding the precise reasons for Doug Beattie's "de-selection" in Upper Bann by the Ulster Unionist Party. He may be too liberal/moderate, whatever that means, maybe because he said he is an Irish unionist, or he is not in the Orange Order, or maybe he does not gel with some voters in the area, but he is intelligent caring and is a unionist, and he has bravely served his country. In my opinion this is a myopic decision by the UUP and does not lend itself for the Party overall to winning votes from moderate Catholics, remember 15% >20% are pro UK minded.

Maybe that's just irrational fear; the Labour Party and Conservative Parties, and indeed in the ROI with FF and FG have similar varieties of left and right. So if you were a unionist how would you improve inter party relationships and capitalise pro union votes within existing the three party unionism?

Time for the three main unionist parties to start discussing biting of the co-operative bullet, maybe even considering an amalgamation under the original Ulster Unionist Party name. Be brave, there are always various strands of thought in every successful political party. Personal pride might suffer but Northern Ireland's position in the UK may well benefit in the end.
Cool FM News@newsoncool

⁉️🗳NEW: 'I guarantee unionism will win the next election. I can write a list of seats where unionist cooperation would see more returned.' 🎥@duponline Leader @GRobinsonDUP says he guarantees that if unionism “works together”, it will win on a scale that “cannot be ignored.” 🎤He told Chief Reporter @jamesgould23 there must be a willingness among parties to cooperate, and once again made clear he is open to that. Reform UK has made major gains at the expense of Labour in the English council elections. There are pro-independence parties in power in Scotland with the SNP, and Plaid Cymru in Wales. Gavin Robinson dismissed the republican movement in the UK, saying it was not a vote for independence, but rather a protest vote against Labour.

Obviously I’m not a unionist however I feel that instead of focusing on the negative aspects of the obvious weakening of the union caused by Brexit that the economic benefits being identified by some for the north due to access to two large markets (Europe and Britain) should have been embraced and supported, thus boosting the internal economy and making the prospect of a united Ireland less financially attractive…I know it’s a very simple answer however unionism let itself be led by Jamie Bryson and Jimbo Allister…big mistake…

@doherty_pablo @PaddyShanks Women have been vocal on this platform and as that border is going nowhere but our rights are, they've made the choice. Ive no reason to doubt them.

WF is a consequence of Brexit…the greatest example of self harm in post Second World War history, maybe ever. The recent announcement with regard to Doug Beattie (regarded by many within unionism as too moderate) reflects a move to the right leading me to believe that any One Unionist Voice (OUV) (you can credit me with copyright if they go with that) would be more like the Reform Party and will attract far right extremism and racists, along with those genuine unionists….so basically more TUV & DUP and the ultimate transition of the UUP into a small group of independent rural unionist councillors.

I have though about that. Maybe distasteful to some unionists, depends upon the skills and eloquence any potential new leader of a ONE party. The message must be clear, moderation towards moderate nationalists, coupled with strong unionism. Power sharing with SF is TUV's main gripe, plus the after affects of the WF which most unionists aren't particularly happy with. Few unionists will not, at the end of the day vote Alliance if it means losing a seat to SF.

@doherty_pablo @PaddyShanks On specific topics who are the extremists now? Its mainly TUV and DUP who speak up on women's rights for example. For all women. Who would have thought even 5 years ago republican nationalist women would get behind those parties. But they have.

Meditating In A Field Near Aghagallon I need no technology to provide the peace That I require In beautiful technicolour Natures orchestral arrangement In perfect surround sound Nurtures my imagination into the spiritual place To which I do aspire The gentle birdsong compliments The percussion of the breeze As my mind dances to the symphony I inhale the fresh pure air As one with that magical place I embrace its beauty and gently I am at ease. pablo26

@whywouldthatbe @PaddyShanks I’m just making the point that religious affiliation is not a definitive basis on which to judge how a person may vote…an indicator yes…

Lets not lose sight of the fact that in an Irish Times poll three years ago, 21 % of Catholics would have voted to remain within UK and 59% would have vote to leave the UK and 18% did not wish to commit themselves, vast majority of Protestants are pro UK remain, hence the regular and constant overall 60%+ majority against a united Ireland.
Mr Virtue Signal@MrVirtueSignal

@MatthewOToole2 It really isn't. If the "unity" project is successfully 'reaching beyond' traditional divides let me tell you about staying in the UK.

My kids asked me if I’d watched Stephen Nolan’s current project “Peeler’s” and I replied “No, I’d rather lift dogshit in the garden as at least by doing that I wouldn’t be exploiting people’s vulnerabilities for self promotion”….they laughed and said “yeah whatever”

Keep getting asked if I have watched Nolan’s ‘peelers’. Thank god, no, because from the sounds of it, the people on it seem vulnerable. Drink, drugs and mental health issues. Is this supposed to be entertainment?
