2025 in Review: AI’s Impact on Domains 2025 saw a sharp rise in UDRP cases filed in bad faith, making it a standout year for reverse domain name hijacking (RDNH). While WIPO publishes extensive UDRP statistics, it does not separately track RDNH findings. Data from third-party sources fills this gap. According to UDRP.tools, there were 86 RDNH decisions across WIPO and FORUM in 2025, up from 56 in 2024, 50 in 2023, and 47 in 2022. Panelists are also considering RDNH more frequently, with over 200 cases addressing the issue in 2025, compared to 122 the year before. GigaLaw, which began tracking RDNH in Q2 2025, reports similar trends across multiple providers, including WIPO, FORUM, CAC, ADNDRC, and CIIDRC. It found that 1.3% of cases in Q2 and 1.2% in Q3 resulted in RDNH findings. Several factors appear to be driving this increase. As high-quality domain names become more expensive, some companies are turning to UDRP as a last resort after failing to acquire domains through the market. In parallel, the Internet Commerce Association (ICA) has played a key role in raising awareness of RDNH through panelist training and its weekly case analysis newsletter. AI may further accelerate this trend. In 2025, more cases suggested that AI tools gave self-represented complainants false confidence to file weak or baseless complaints. Despite the growth in RDNH findings, such cases remain a small minority. Overall, the UDRP system continues to function effectively, with the vast majority of decisions involving clear-cut cybersquatting and resulting in domain transfers. Source:domainnamewire.com

Ethos Capital Adds New Investors to Identity Digital via Continuation Vehicle Ethos Capital has announced a new funding round for Identity Digital through a continuation vehicle (CV) transaction, bringing in new institutional investors while allowing existing investors to gain liquidity. The new investors include TPG GP Solutions, Neuberger-managed funds, Accel-KKR, Coller Capital, CVC Secondary Partners, British Columbia Investment Management Corporation (BCI), and 10 East. Ethos said the transaction will support Identity Digital’s next phase of growth. The move comes ahead of the upcoming new top-level domain (TLD) application window expected in 2026. Identity Digital, the largest applicant in the 2012 TLD round, is widely expected to apply for multiple new domains. Identity Digital manages popular TLDs such as .live, .today, .life, and .world, and also provides registry services for domains including .org, .ai, and .io. Source:domainnamewire.com

UDRP tossed in French food fight: reverse domain name hijacking A WIPO panel ruled that French food company Ekin SAS tried to reverse-hijack the domain EkinFrites.com. Ekin SAS, which sells frozen fries and runs a restaurant under ekin.fr, filed a UDRP case against Georges Topal / Financiere FD. Topal said he bought the Ekin Frites business in 2020, including a trademark license and rights to EkinFrites.fr. The two sides are already fighting in court. Panelist Vincent Denoyelle said the dispute falls outside UDRP and found reverse domain name hijacking because the complaint hid the ongoing litigation and didn’t disclose the parties’ prior business relationship. PIR’s 2024 Tax Return: New Identity Digital Contract Drops Backend Cost to ~$1 per .org Domain Public Interest Registry (PIR), the nonprofit operator of .org, has released its 2024 Form 990. Revenue: Program revenue reached $104.2M, slightly up from 2023. Total revenue increased to $106.4M, boosted by investment gains. Backend contract savings: PIR paid $10.5M to Identity Digital to operate the .org registry backend—down from $15.1M the prior year. With 11.1M .org domains, the new contract effectively costs ~$1 per domain, setting a benchmark for large TLDs. Registry services expenses have dropped nearly 75% since PIR rebid the contract in 2016. Other expenses & revenue: PIR paid ICANN $3.1M. Paid GoDaddy $0.9M for promotional services (down from $1.2M). Recorded $0.2M in “TLD Assignment Revenue,” likely tied to Identity Digital. Contribution to Internet Society: Continued to decline—$61M in 2024 (down from $64.8M in 2023 and $69.3M in 2022). Domain stats: 2.2M new .org registrations in 2024, the highest since 2017. Renewal rates: 52.4% (year 1), 74.2% (year 2), 80.1% blended. Source:domainnamewire.com

Google Wins NanoBanana.ai Domain Dispute Last month, Google lost a UDRP case over NanoBananaAI .com because it failed to prove common law trademark rights—the product had just launched, and Google hadn’t linked itself to it publicly. But in a similar case under the .ai domain dispute policy, Google has now won. The majority of the panel found that Google did have trademark rights because: NANO BANANA gained immediate visibility due to the strong popularity of the LM Arena platform. The term is inherently distinctive for AI image-generation software. It therefore didn’t require high consumer recognition to acquire secondary meaning, and Google’s evidence showed quick source-identifying significance. One panelist, David E. Sorkin, dissented, referencing the earlier decision where Google lost. The respondent claimed he registered the domain because “Nano Banana” matched the name of his puppy, Nano, who loved a banana-shaped toy. However, this excuse was undermined by the fact that he used the domain for an AI image-editing tool—the same type of service Google uses the name for. Source:domainnamewire.com

Scottish Restaurant Dispute Ends in Reverse Domain Name Hijacking A conflict over the domain lailabrunchedinburgh.co.uk has led to a finding of reverse domain name hijacking. The case centers on Laila Edinburgh, a restaurant whose current owner filed the complaint. The domain was registered by a consultant who previously worked with a former restaurant at the same location. She claimed rights to the intellectual property and said she had an “implied license” with the current owner. Panelist David Kreider ruled that the matter concerns IP licensing, not cybersquatting, and concluded that the complainant engaged in hijacking by misrepresenting facts and making unsubstantiated claims. Dispute Cloudflare Data Shows .su Outranks .com in DNS Popularity Cloudflare’s latest Radar update ranks top-level domains by “DNS Magnitude,” a metric showing how many unique clients query each TLD—offering a more accurate measure of reach than raw query volume. Surprisingly, the .su domain (the old Soviet Union ccTLD) ranked ahead of .com, though the result may be skewed by unusual traffic from domains like 14emeliaterracewestroxburyma02132.su. Among new TLDs, Google’s .dev performed best, while dot-brand domains like .google, .apple, and .microsoft also ranked in the top 25. Cloudflare’s new Radar pages display each TLD’s DNS data, geographical distribution, and certificate insights. Source:domainnamewire.com

Google Loses UDRP Case Over NanoBananaAI.com Domain Google has lost a UDRP case against the domain NanoBananaAI.com, after the panel found the company failed to prove common law trademark rights in “Nano Banana.” Google argued that “Nano Banana” referred to its AI image generation tool launched on August 12, 2025, and accused the registrant, Ping Lin of China, of using the domain to promote a competing product and mislead users about a connection to Google. Panelist David E. Sorkin rejected the complaint, noting that Google did not present enough evidence to show that “Nano Banana” had acquired distinctiveness as a trademark in such a short time, nor had it publicly claimed rights to the name. The case highlights how difficult it can be for companies to win UDRP disputes over newly launched brands. Google still has pending complaints involving NanoBanana.ai and NanoBananaGoogle.com. WIPO Rules Reverse Domain Name Hijacking in EDMI.com Dispute A WIPO panel has ruled that EDMI Limited, a utility metering company, engaged in reverse domain name hijacking over the domain EDMI.com. The domain, owned by an Indian investor, was purchased in 2020 for $4,201 at an expired domain auction. The investor owns over 200 four-letter domains and argued that short, pronounceable names have inherent value. The three-member panel found no bad faith, noting the domain previously belonged to another company using the same acronym, showing its potential value to multiple entities. EDMI Limited had attempted to buy the domain in 2022, agreed on a price, and even sent it to escrow before backing out. The company later demanded the domain for $5,000 or threatened a UDRP complaint. Panelists: Scott Austin, Gerald Levine, and David Andrew Allison. Complainant represented by Amica Law LLC; Respondent by Ankur Raheja, Cylaw Solutions. Source:domainnamewire.com

Verisign Q3 Earnings Summary Verisign (NASDAQ: VRSN) added 1.45 million new .com and .net domains in Q3, with growth driven by .com while .net declined by about 0.1 million. The company processed 10.6 million new registrations, up from 9.3 million a year ago and 10.4 million in Q2. Revenue rose 7.3% year over year to $419 million, operating income increased 5.6% to $284 million, and net income grew 6.0% to $213 million. Verisign declared a $0.77 per share dividend and repurchased $215 million of stock during the quarter. The company raised its full-year guidance, now expecting domain base growth of 2.2% to 2.5%, compared to the previous forecast of 1.2% to 2.0%. CEO Jim Bidzos said AI is positively influencing domain registration trends. When asked about Google’s shutdown of its AdSense for Domains program, Bidzos noted that Google has been de-emphasizing domain monetization since 2011. While this could affect parked domain revenue, the overall domain growth trend remains strong and appears to offset any potential declines. Source:domainnamewire.com

Google Promotes Dot-Brand Domain NamesS Google Registry published a blog post encouraging companies to apply for their own dot-brand top-level domains. The company shared three key lessons from using .google: Security: Google launched blog.google instead of hosting “The Keyword” on google.com to reduce risks associated with sharing the same domain for products and marketing websites. SEO: Moving to a .brand domain doesn’t have to hurt search rankings, though Google admits it’s easier for them than for most companies. The firm also suggests redirecting .com versions, like about.google.comabout.google. Trademark protection: Using a .brand domain helps prevent phishing and misuse of trademarks in second-level domains. Still, Google maintains .com equivalents (e.g., googleblog.com) and hasn’t moved major services like Google Ads or Analytics off google.com. Source:domainnamewire.com

Blockchain.ai auction ends at $405,000, but prior registrant files lawsuit to halt transfer The expired domain Blockchain.ai sold for $405,000, but the previous owner, Howard Gould, has filed a lawsuit to stop the transfer. Gould claims he renewed the domain through OnlyDomains, but an auto-renewal failure led to its expiry on July 19, 2025. He says he paid for renewal on September 21 and later a restoration fee, but the domain still went into PendingDelete status. Meanwhile, the .ai registry (Identity Digital) and Namecheap auctioned it off. After attempts to halt the auction failed, Gould filed a lawsuit in California against OnlyDomains, its parent CentralNic, Identity Digital, and Namecheap. Source:domainnamewire.com

Video game company tries reverse domain name hijacking Video game company Oniric Studio SRL has been found guilty of reverse domain name hijacking over oniric.com. The company was founded in 2020 and registered an “Oniric” trademark in 2021, but the domain’s owner, Stanley Pace, registered the name back in 2012—eight years earlier. A Czech Arbitration Court panel ruled the complaint was filed in bad faith, noting there was no evidence the registrant could have targeted a company that didn’t yet exist. Oniric Studio was represented by Pierre-Yves Thoumsin, while John Berryhill represented the domain owner. Source:domainnamewire.com
