URGENT: European Institutions Must Act – A Humanitarian Volunteer Faces Extradition to Russia
To the Members of the European Parliament,
To European institutions, human rights defenders, and the international community:
On September 3rd, Giorgi Kinoian, a 29-year-old Georgian citizen and humanitarian volunteer, was detained by Armenian border forces and is currently being held in Vanadzor, awaiting extradition to Russia.
He has been sentenced in absentia by the so-called “Donetsk People’s Republic” for his humanitarian efforts. Giorgi was not involved in combat; he helped evacuate civilians from active war zones.
If extradited, he faces serious risk of torture, inhumane treatment, and political persecution.
Lawyers warn that the chances of stopping the extradition are extremely low unless immediate international attention and pressure are applied.
So far, the Georgian government has remained completely silent. No official response, no public statements, no action.
This silence puts Giorgi at even greater risk. That is why we are calling on European institutions, Armenian civil society, and international human rights organizations to raise their voices and intervene.
If Armenia claims a European orientation, it must demonstrate it through its actions.
Handing over a humanitarian to a repressive regime would be a direct violation of European values.
The Georgian media has already begun covering the case, but international support is urgently needed.
