@InsideDomains Many of the new gTLDs are not active/launched. The myth about all the "good" domain names being gone has been around for over 20 years. It helped launch the .BIZ/INFO/MOBI etc in the 2000s and the new gTLDs in 2012.

@InsideDomains That gets down to the intent of the registrant. Some registrants may not want to trade their domain name and may develop a site or service with it. However, not all domain names are developed. %s for even .COM are around 30%. Much lower for some new gTLDs.

@InsideDomains The new gTLD extensions are not, in most cases, really generic. The gTLD string acts a limiter for registrations. Rather than being a catch-all gTLD like .COM, some new gTLDs automatically reduce their potential market because of the extension.

@InsideDomains There's also the reg fee to consider. Some of the new gTLDs have a reg fee that's a multiple of .COM. TLDs need to be marketed well. The high reg fee means that some people will hang on to the domain name as they've sunk so much money into renewals but low web usage is a problem.

@InsideDomains Think of it from a registry point of view. As long as people keep registering domain names and some renewing them, it makes money for the registry. Some of the geo gTLDs are doing well but a few are not. This is because they are competing with .COM or a strong ccTLD.

@InsideDomains @namepros Thanks. They were strange days. The weird thing about the .INFO give away was that many people renewed. For the time, it was brilliant marketing by Afilas.

@kingkane @Tupp_Ed The last thing that RTE would want to do would be to fragment its current advertising market. TV advertising is still pre-Web while Web advertising has moved on to Pay Per Click. That would cause major problems for broadcasters where few if any watch some programmes.

@kingkane @Tupp_Ed We are not even close to being able to accurately track consumption of RTE content unless RTE Player and the data from cable TV and satellite TV is provided. With the data, it might appear that some programmes have very small audiences and are not worth the advertising.
