1 in 6 Americans live in the Northeast Megalopolis stretching from Boston to DC, even if high speed rail only worked in this part of the country (it doesn't) it would still be a valuable service to tons of Americans.

When I lived in DC I took the train to NYC all the time because it wasn’t that much longer than flying (particularly when security/getting to and from airports was factored in). That’s one of probably five places in America rail really makes sense.
