Tonights weather was extremely wet, misserable, and difficult to work in but it came with one huge blessing; seeing everyone from our volunteers to the people queuing embrace a genuine sense of gratitude. Due to the rain everyone was huddled together under the GPO, trying to stay as dry as possible from the rain. As they approached our tables, everyone came smiling, expressing their sense of gratitude not only for the food, but for feeling that their needs were being considered and catered to. Since the morning we also had a reporter from the RTE doing a piece on our soup run and by the end of the day she expressed how much this experience changed her outlook. She recognised that the role of the soup run is not simply to feed people, but there's a huge social element for everyone involved. There are stories shared between people, relations built, and a community that is always filled with recognition and thanks. We had 475 meals tonight as well as 5 6ft tables lined with food, many sleeping bags, clothes, and personal care items. As we passed out each and every item of food, we recognise that knowing people's names, their stories, and their struggles is one of the most comforting aspects of our work, especially for those who might often feel forgotten, their voices unheard. We also had 15 international students from Kuwait studying to be doctors in RCSI volunteering with us this week. Seeing young people studying to be surgeons taking time out of their schedules to help our work speaks to the impact that it has on the entire communtiy. We experienced how showing up and helping those who need it most impacted them as they expressed their grateful for this opportunity. After experiencing an evening where the atmosphere was full of appreciation and recognition, we feel even more blessed to be able to impact members of the Irish community, even if for just 2 hours. We realise that the work we do is insignificant without your support.
