“The Strive” — Masks of Luci by @SamSpratt
This might be the most meaningful piece I’ve purchased to date.
There’s a purity to it that hit me immediately. It took me back to Gladiator—that moment in the Colosseum when Maximus stands behind the mask, then reveals himself:
“My name is Maximus Decimus Meridius…”
He states his purpose with boldness and with intent to avenge his loved ones and conquer evil. One of the most iconic scenes ever, at least for me.
But it goes much deeper than that.
What Sam has built isn’t just art—it’s real. It’s novel. And I genuinely connect with it.
And then there’s the name: The Strive.
For the past couple weeks, I kept coming back to it, making sure it was exactly what I wanted. I even asked my wife what she thought about the word “strive”—she had no idea why I was asking or that I was looking at this piece. It turned into a conversation about our kids… about who we want them to become… about pushing to be their best in all things and how we as parents will help them strive to get there.
It hit home.
We talked about the hard things we’ve both gone through growing up—and how, at the core of it, we were just striving to do our best.
Truth is, none of this was on my bingo card in 2024. I didn’t expect to care about digital art or this space and its people at all… not until my son was born.
That’s what reconnected me to collecting. To my inner child. And somehow, it led me here.
So yeah… maybe this piece isn’t just something I bought.
Maybe it’s a reflection of where I’m at.
Still striving—
to build,
to grow,
and to make this into something meaningful for my family but also to help people see this space through a different lens that has meaning.
