For the first time today, I realized that the problem of Nigeria is not leadership per say, but the opportunists nature of its citizens.
I was scheduled for an appointment at the Russian Embassy Abuja by 11am today, and somehow, I missed my way to the Embassy. Instead of the Russian Embassy, I found myself at the UN Office which had the same structure painting with the Russian Embassy. I checked my time and it was 10:42am. Looking frustrated, I asked for directions and the security guards directed me to a cluster of Taxi Drivers at the opposite side. I crossed to the other side and immediately about five of the Taxi Drivers rushed towards me.
"Oga where you dey go"? They asked simultaneously
"Russian Embassy" I responded
"Ahhhhh! Russian Embassy. E far o" one of the men responded.
"Is about two hours drive from here" the man added
"How much will you take me there"? I asked
"Oga na 30k o" he responded
My heart skip.
I was pleading and negotiating with this man to please accept 20k as I was running out of time but he stood his ground.
A Hausa man hawking orange who was following our conversation, came behind me and whispered in Hausa "Dan dai kana sauri ne, Amman akasama zaka iya zuwa Russian Embassy" (if not because you are in a haste, you can trek to Russian Embassy).
The orange hawker then instructed me to follow him. I checked my time and it was 10:49am.
We trekked few miles, take just two turns and crossed over an overhead bridge. Boom! We are at the front of Russian Embassy.
I checked my time and it was 10:57am. I could not help but hug the man tightly until the orange on his stray start falling. We chatted for few minutes. He told me he came all the way from Ingawa Local Government in Katsina State. I told him I am from Funtua local government in Katsina State. We quickly exchange contact and I dash off.
While waiting for my turn to be invited into the Embassy, my mind traveled back to the Taxi Driver I was desperately begging to accept 20k. Some of us are worse than the leaders we complain everyday about. It's just opportunity we lack.

@igboeri_kelvin @Teeniiola First of all, Yoruba is not a tribe, Yoruba is Ethnic nationality. Yoruba is a nation. This is how you guys started tribal bigotry. Yoruba responded with the same energy, you started playing victims card
English

@Teeniiola Yoruba people with their confusion here and there

You’ll never gaslight me into believing it was the Yorubas who started bigotry on Nigerian Twitter.
That’s a lie from the pit of hell. Bigotry didn’t begin in 2023 when Tinubu became president.
It started the moment Buhari was sworn in as President, and for eight solid years, there was no name that Hausa/Fulani and Muslims weren’t called on this app. And all we did was swallow it and stay silent, simply because we don’t have the kind of media presence the Yorubas do.
The fact that the Yorubas have now refused to tolerate certain things and are no longer staying silent doesn’t make them bigots.
The real bigots have always been the Igbos, the ones who dish out all kinds of hate, from insults to harassment and when you refuse to stay silent or take it lying down, they suddenly start playing the victim card.

The United States Mission in Nigeria has advised American citizens to avoid ‘unnecessary travel to Nigerian military and government facilities’ due to increased global security concerns.Travel packages
In a statement released on Monday, June 23, the American Embassy prohibited its employees and their families from visiting military sites or other government venues in the Nigerian capital unless for official purposes.
This advisory came in the wake of unspecified global developments that have prompted heightened security measures and a reevaluation of movement around sensitive locations.
American citizens residing in or visiting Nigeria are urged to remain vigilant in public places, particularly in locations frequented by Westerners, expatriates, and government officials.
The embassy also advised avoiding large gatherings, maintaining unpredictable routines, and being familiar with emergency exits in buildings.Travel packages
US nationals are encouraged to review their personal security plans and exercise increased caution during their stay in Nigeria.
The statement read in part, “Due to increased security concerns arising from current global developments, US Mission Nigeria informs US citizens that all US Embassy employees and their families are prohibited from non-official travel to a Nigerian military site or other government venue in Abuja at this time.
“Actions to take: Stay alert in public places, with particular attention to locations and venues where Westerners, expatriates, and government officials frequent.
“Avoid large gatherings and consider limiting unnecessary travel. Avoid predictable routines. Familiarise yourself with emergency exits when you enter buildings. Review your personal security plans.”
Despite the new restrictions, the Consular Sections of the US Embassy in Abuja and the Consulate General in Lagos remain open and operational.
