Simples assim.

@badgalenzo Yup... And even beyond that, it makes it almost impossible for people to understand that someone can have traditional personal values, without in ANY way wishing to impose that on others... Which from everything we know, is the case with Gwen.

@dowellndoubtnot Yes, definitely. People are so polarised right now (understandably sometimes) that expressing more “conservative” or “traditional values” reads automatically like MAGA/extreme right wing/etc

Yes, i certainly agree with a lot of that. I think where it gets tricky, is that it has now gotten to the point that a lot of that disappointment, is being based on straight up lies. It is now basically common understanding in swaths of the population that Gwen Stefani is MAGA...which is just a straight up lie. So respecting that disappointment absolutely, but not the lies that much of it is now built on.

@dowellndoubtnot In a way this is curse for a lot of artists which represented so much for so many. Unfortunately internet just promotes polarisation instead of conversation, and hating is way more fun than going a bit deeper. But everyone is entitled to be disappointed as well.

I totally agree, it is an accumulation of things. I think where it gets complicated with Gwen, is that the vast majority of those "things" are things that have put her on the opposite side of the cultural divide in a very polarized society, not of the political divide...and for me the question becomes, is attacking that kind of shift who we want to be on the left? Is it morally fair? Is it ideologically coherent? Is it politically smart? There are of course things that are totally valid to criticize about her, as there is with every celebrity, and every human...and i'm always happy to have nuanced and respectful conversations about those as well....and totally valid for people to not want to be fans anymore, or feel that they've lost the connection with her, etc...all of that. But at some point, long ago...i think anyone looking at this fairly would say that the conversation in general has tipped well onto the side of toxic, misogynistic, anti-Catholic, and honestly largely dishonest attacks on Gwen...and millions like her who don't fall neatly into the current cultural boxes so many of us live in, that she now represents. If the right, or the internet more generally was snarkily, condescendingly, and honestly often viciously attacking and making fun of someone for speaking about their personal Islamic, or Hindu, or indigenous faith... or athiesm for that matter...how would we feel about it?  Seriously, take a second and think about it. Think about how you'd feel if the Internet was full of people insulting a woman for sharing her own very personal journey with Islam, and a more traditional lifestyle... Not in ANY way trying to impose that on anybody else, but just her own journey. Think about all the hate that woman would be receiving from certain parts of the internet, all the unfair labels... We'd be disgusted, and defensive of her i hope... Rightly so. It would absolutely be religious, cultural bigotry. Well, this is absolutely religious and cultural bigotry as well, except that it's coming from my fellow progressives, and it's really sad and frustrating to me. Is it not still wrong just because it's coming from people you agree with on most other issues? Let me be clear again... There are totally fair and valid reasons to be critical of Gwen...as there would be with the Islamic woman...but that's not what this is about anymore, and we would certainly understand that if the hate were coming from the right, and shift our focus appropriately to pushing back against these attacks. And I know that many people have had terrible experiences with Christianity/Catholicism, and there are totally fair and valid reasons to be critical of institutionalized religion of all kind...i've had my own. But again, that's not what this is. This has straight up largely become people sitting around (and often doing it for clicks, engagement, and cash on Elon's/Zuckerberg's/Elison's platforms) making fun of a woman for sharing her personal faith and cultural journal that they don't understand. And let me also be clear that I understand that there are tons of historical power dynamics and reasons as to why anti-Islamic, or antisemitic, or many other forms of religious bigotry are more dangerous and destructive than anti-Catholic bigotry, especially in this country at this moment in time...and i am in no way trying to equate the dangers. Gwen will be fine lol. That being said, there is also a long, nasty history of anti-Catholic bigotry in this country...and we've seen some of that rearing it's head recently. But more importantly imo, it all just comes from the same place...from not understanding someone's faith and culture, and rather than respecting it...choosing to reject, make fun of, and attack it...which is basically the antitheses of progressivism.

@dowellndoubtnot In her case it does feel like an accumulation of things. What a long an interesting topic! Happy to unpack it.
