@itsclivetime @zzzetachrome I am not inclined to assume the DoW will operate in good faith, and I don’t read the legal language as locking in current policy. If DoW breaks the spirit but not letter of the agreement, most OAI employees may remain unaware. And unilateral termination probably isn’t an option.

@zzzetachrome @dozenaltech It’s a little bit oddball. But if you’re testing stuff like this in court, the contract has been terminated long ago anyway.

@itsclivetime Only to the extent that mass domestic surveillance violates 4A or other current laws. Those are woefully inadequate for the AI age. Fully autonomous weapons are only banned “where law, regulation, or Department policy requires human control”, which is to say, not at all.

@dozenaltech I think it does basically cover mass domestic surveillance (not all surveilllance) and fully autonomous weapons (not partially autonomous weapons), which are the same lines Ant drew anthropic.com/news/statement…

@itsclivetime @krishnakaasyap Does this not say that “‘all lawful uses’ are permitted regarding autonomous weapons and mass domestic surveillance (regardless of whether current laws are mature and comprehensive enough to cover all aspects of AI-enabled mass surveillance)”? Because that’s how I read it.

This is what I currently believe to be the case and am advocating internally to release more information about as soon as feasible. If we later learn this is not the case, then I will advocate internally to terminate the contract.
Boaz Barak@boazbaraktcs

There is this narrative that up until this week, Anthropic had this wonderful contract that prevented the U.S. government from doing mass domestic surveillance or autonomous lethal weapons, and now all hell will break lose. As I wrote, I am not a fan of accelerating AI specifically in the national security space. If I had been an Anthropic employee at the time they signed their original deal with the DoW, I would have probably opposed it, especially given the reduced control since they worked through Palantir. And I don't think having some terms of use in the contract is what we can rely on to protect us. I believe the drama of the last week about these terms of use is more about politics than substance. The substance is about the details, which I hope more of which will come out soon. But it is wrong to present the OAI contract as if it is the same deal than Anthropic rejected, or even as if it is less protective of the red lines than the deal Anthropic already had in place before. Obviously I don't know all details of what Anthropic had before, but based on what I know, it is quite likely that the contract OAI signed gives *more* guarantees of no usage of models for mass domestic surveillance or autonomous lethal weapons than Anthropic ever had.

@GuiveAssadi I don’t understand why people don’t just gather in a public park or beach and everyone brings snacks/musical instruments. Simple, ~free, and fun.

I wonder if weddings are so expensive because it’s the one time in most people’s lives they have to negotiate custom contracts with vendors instead of just picking something off a price list, and they have no idea how to do that.

@BayAreaNewLibs Sorry I couldn’t make it out last night! Hope @thecydneyhayes wasn’t too disappointed to miss me. I’m sure she’ll be even more distraught to learn that I also detest Trump!

Sometimes I think about e.g. multivariable calculus and call it “trivial”, but it’s good to step back every now and then and appreciate how much I’ve learned. Things only seem easy in retrospect.

@dozenaltech Tbf rationalists have similar trouble talking to anyone outside the community. Did Annie tell them you expected thousands?

@ilex_ulmus She helped inspire the march, but I would not have invited her had I known her history. x.com/dozenaltech/st…

@dawnlightmelody @AnniePosting I first Annie on Jan 22. She was talking about how much she liked billionaires, and that conversation was one of my inspirations for the march. She falsely claimed to media that she was the organizer when she was not involved with that, and said some other things I disagree with.

@EconDerek Yes, though billionaires have created a lot of growth, to be fair.

@ilex_ulmus Unsurprisingly, more serious outlets like the Wall Street Journal do a much better job with their coverage, and rarely make things up. Obviously, I disagree with Annie's remarks here. Abigail Neely was looking for the most inflammatory statements she could find, and she got them.

@ilex_ulmus There's a lot of variation in journalistic quality. This particular article originally claimed that I expected thousands of people to attend, but fewer than a dozen did (wrong on both counts). Many journalists are trying to push a narrative rather than report the facts.

@dawnlightmelody @AnniePosting I’ve since heard more concerning reports about her behavior from friends. Had I been aware of this beforehand, I would not have invited her to participate.
