Excited to chair my first symposium at #APS25DC! 🎉
I’ll present “Investigating Momentary Psychosocial & Physiological Risk & Protective Factors for Suicidal Ideation in Daily Life” w/ Kirsten Christensen, Lori Scott, Rich Liu @ATsypes@AlexDombrovski1@aidangcw@PsychScience
This experiment gives concrete results that neural activity can be decoded and directly tied to higher cognitive tasks, such as handwriting. Willett et al. opens the door for the usage of neural activity for therapy in those who cannot navigate the world the way most can.
Of course, factors such as neural plasticity may impact this new method of communication. In fact, Willett discovered that neural patterns encoding for certain letters do change over time. To correct for this, the RNNs can be retrained, which also decreases elevated error rates.
In their paper titled "High-performance brain-to-text communication via handwriting," Willett et al. introduce a method of written communication for paralysis patients.
Through activation of neuron terminals of vCA1 neurons, they found that specifically activating the vCA1-LHA projection causes the animal to display more avoidance behavior-
The hippocampus is known to be important for spatial memory and navigation, most notably containing a unique subtype of neurons called place cells. However, differences between the dorsal and ventral hippocampus are important to note.
