As someone who has taught reading intervention, I’m pretty quiet on the reading wars except to say that when you use the term “war” you will end up with casualties. You’ll dehumanize. You’ll create enemies in a way that prevents dialogue. Phonics matter. Blending matters. Stories matter. Prior knowledge matters. Helping kids fall in loving with reading matters. I want to see kids read. I’m not interested in warfare.

Implementing task-based math instruction. Students collaborating on tasks involving fractions using physical manipulative, representational modeling and using video to explain the process. We use observations and conversations to drive our whole group lesson.

@jediguybrarian @drtharris @BeaverReaders If that’s how book choice is being enforced, then that’s on your district, not on the TCWRP Units of Study (check the covers of your resource, Lucy is not the only author).Books choice is essential to the UoS and Reading Workshop.

@drtharris @BeaverReaders We did it right for so many years in my district but sadly district office bought into Lucy Calkins, kids are now forced to choose only from certain books district purchased, & teachers are no longer bringing kids into the library for free choice. I am so depressed.

@courosa I know exactly what you meant by stepping on the Lego. I had “Morton’s Neuroma”. Basically when a nerve cluster in your foot pushes through the tissue and is exposed.

Has anyone else experienced foot pain that I can only describe as stepping on a pile of LEGO every time I put any weight on my right foot? It's been more than a week like this and it's getting old.

Very thankful and proud that my school district @Naperville203 is taking on a very real and very deep rooted system of racism and inequity. @DenaSimmons spoke hard truths that we needed to hear. We weren’t shamed, we weren’t reprimanded, we were inspired and challenged.
