Every researcher knows mistakes happen, but it takes real commitment to open science to put your code and data out there, knowing the risks. You are *asking* the world for critique. Unfortunately, most of criminology is still unwilling to do this most basic step. That's why it was such a shame that Jacob Kang-Brown chose to take a more cynical approach, pushing a narrative that felt aimed at advancing an agenda rather than building scientific understanding. Open science is about collaboration and refining our work, not using errors as ammo. Not advancing political projects over professional science. What impressed me most was the original authors' restraint – no instant social media back-and-forth, just a trust in their process and the rigor of their work. They let an independent review confirm the findings and didn’t rely on tweets to defend themselves. That’s real professionalism and integrity in action. This kind of response should be a model for us all – letting science, not social media, do the talking. We should thank @jnixy and his co-authors for setting a higher standard for how we approach open science and handle critique in research.

Our new paper in Criminology demonstrates how leaving gangs improves mental health, drawing on the stress process perspective and data from the Northwestern Juvenile Project
John Leverso@JohnLeverso

Inspired by findings in health criminology, Me @dpyrooz and the Twitterless Cy @OUSOCCRIM investigated what happens to the mental health of gang members upon disengagement. Details in the comments but check out the full paper (open access!) here. onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10.11…

@ACunninghamITTA @GOVERNING Indeed, and preferable to indiscriminate and opaque policing, which is why it shouldn't be difficult to demonstrate the utility of the databases.

@dpyrooz @GOVERNING Still most violent firearm related crime in Chicago has nexus to gang membership as victim or offender. It's pretty obvious that any practical approach to reducing violent crime in cities over 250K will have to collect intelligence on criminal gangs or remain ineffectual.

I had the pleasure of reading an advanced copy. Excellent book. My blurb on the back: "This book packs a punch. Paul Joyce pulls back the curtain on Boston's gangland to unveil the trials and tribulations of the boys who were there when it started and the men they became."
