Numbers are humbling. Even when we understand them (and their limitations!), it can be hard to communicate all of that in limited space & time.
So my friends and colleagues at @NewsHour and @KnologyResearch have compiled our best tips: reportingwithnumbers.com

It was so fun to be a part of this with @candersHamilton, @drNYCnerd, and Anusha Anand talking about being queer language scholars in academia and in industry!

Love me a good statistical joke.

People keep talking about how this is unprecedented, but on average, American presidents are indicted 1.54 times per president.

@tirerim I cannot remember any of the things I used to know about subjacency or islands, so much appreciated!
English
@drNYCnerd The more detailed explanation is probably something about the d-structure having "Curzon Dax took a Klingon blood oath with three Klingons", and a subjacency violation because "three Klingons" can't cross multiple bounding nodes when it moves?
English

@rinewithoutacat I do not even know what you are subtweeting but I am holding a lot of space for this and for you.
English

@clancynewyork @pellechs Haven't found them yet! Thank you.
English

@drNYCnerd @pellechs Hi! Is this resolved or should we keep RT'ing?

@ergodicwalk @ShriramKMurthi @knology @pbsnewshour @NSF @JessicaHullman Point estimates in polling coverage are my go-to example. We don't care about these specific 1,000 people EXCEPT inasmuch as they can tell us something about the populace. And we can only give a range for that larger pop. and even then it's likely and not certain.
English

@ergodicwalk @ShriramKMurthi @knology @pbsnewshour @NSF One of the overarching difficulties is that it's easier to communicate about the sample than the population, so a lot of folks fall back on it -- and that's usually misleading.
@JessicaHullman has a ton of great work in this area!

@anarparikh If you need me to extract something for you, let me know?
