There’s no need for our National Referral Centre to run a 24 hour OPD. It only says that we failed at the Primary Care level if we have to. Secondly, with my little experience of working in an OPD, running a 24 hr OPD when you have an ER is a waste of resources.

If we want to solve the emergency care congestion at teaching hospitals, we have to make a concerted effort to equip and staff the district hospitals. We can't keep asking a handful of health workers at KATH, KBTH etc to improvise around longstanding systemic failures.

An amateur video obtained by The1957News has revealed a troubling development at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital following the government’s directive to health facilities not to turn away patients on the basis of unavailable beds. The footage shows several patients sleeping on the floor in the emergency ward due to the persistent “no bed syndrome” crisis. Further inquiries confirm that, in line with the government’s instructions, nurses are admitting patients despite the acute shortage of beds. As a result, with insufficient beds available in the emergency ward, many patients have no choice but to lie or sit on the floor while awaiting treatment.
