🚨 ETHICS OF A PHARMACISTS Just wrapped up a beautiful moment with my younger interns during break time at the teaching hospital today. We were sitting under the mango tree near the pharmacy department, sipping cold water and eating groundnuts. One of them asked, “Pharm., why do you always call or write to the doctors when you see something wrong with a prescription? Aren’t you scared they’ll feel you’re teaching them?” I smiled and told them: “Listen, my dears… Being a pharmacist is not about competing with the doctor. It’s about protecting the patient. When I see a prescription that can harm someone, maybe a dangerous drug interaction, wrong dose for the patient’s kidney, or something the patient is allergic to, my job is not to keep quiet and dispense. My job is to speak up. That’s not pride. That’s not ‘teaching’ the doctor. That’s simply doing what is right. We are all on the same team. The doctor brings his expertise, I bring mine in medicines, and together we make sure the patient goes home safer and healthier. I explained to them the heart of pharmacist ethics: We don’t just count tablets. We carry a duty, to do good, to do no harm, to respect the patient’s right to safe treatment, and to be fair to every life that comes through our doors. One of the interns nodded slowly and said, “So it’s love for the patient that makes you pick up the phone?” I laughed softly. “Exactly. Love… wrapped in professionalism.” Health is wealth, but only when we guard it with both knowledge and conscience.
