Folks in the nonprofit industrial complex stay arguing about who’s doing the most revolutionary work (or the real work) — and it’s always funny to me.
I’m doing my best to push my own nonprofit to its radical edge, but I also know the limits of what’s possible within these structures.
Don’t get me wrong, I have my high-horse moments too. But I never forget that nonprofits were created to contain radical movements, not build them. They’re part of the counterinsurgency — and the more we recognize that, the more honest we can be about what this work really is, and how to still do solid, principled work within it.

Five years after George Floyd was murdered, the state isn’t just doubling down — it’s building an entire war machine to crush our communities.
Some say Trump is borrowing from the Italian dictator Benito Mussolini’s authoritarian playbook.
But the truth is, these tactics weren’t borrowed – they were made in America. The United States has long perfected the machinery of repression, exporting it abroad and inspiring apartheid regimes and fascist movements across the globe.
My brother @dr_kunta23 and I wrote about it in the Guardian.

@Ericangelo_ms Shout out to working grounds in college! Something about cutting grass in heat that really politicizes you low key

My first job was at a gas station when I was 15—cleaning toilets, washing cars, restocking shelves. Eventually, I got to work the register.
My second job was doing maintenance and landscaping during college. I spent summers in 100-degree Nebraska heat mowing lawns, fixing AC units, and doing whatever else was needed.
I’ve worked at Chili’s, sold gym memberships, and juggled all kinds of jobs just to stay afloat. Even when I landed my first nonprofit role, I’d organize from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., then head straight to my shift at 24 Hour Fitness from 3 p.m. to 11 p.m.
I don’t always talk about those experiences, but they’ve shaped me. They keep me grounded in working-class communities and remind me who I fight for. I’m grateful for those jobs because they taught me discipline, perspective—and how to spot elitism in people who’ve never had to do hard, physical work.
All work is dignified. And all workers deserve respect. Expect for those who oppress for a living.

Any time I speak at a college, a student activist asks “How do you have hope? How do you keep going?” and they mean well but Girl, Mumia Abu Jamal is in a jail cell dying from Hepatitis and he still does everything he can to support the struggle. Who tf are we to not have hope??
