Inspiring and humbling visit to Asian Institute of Gastroenterology, Hyderabad with @DrRupaBanerjee1 Rupa has built an incredible IBD unit with a remarkable team covering high-quality clinical care, outreach, community building and ambitious research. The community outreach programme is extraordinary, with a dedicated team that systematically travels from village to village. The clinic is announced with a traditional drum call. Symptomatic patients are encouraged to come forwards, rapid testing is done locally. On Fridays the mobile endoscopy unit rolls into town. Rupa has shown a rapid increase in IBD cases in both urban and rural settings in India. Newly diagnosed patients then travel to Hyderabad for their expert care. Huge biobanking efforts with >10,000 IBD patients with real-time phenotyping via the registry. I was there all day, visited every department, met the whole extended team, heard presentations on the outreach programme and excellent research efforts, was invited to join @ibd_enc and lectured to the entire department. A day I will never forget. Humbled by their hard-word, dedication and hospitality. Inspired by their innovative working systems and outreach programmes. The start of a great collaboration to improve outcomes for patients with IBD across the world. And together we will work towards prevention.
