I marvel at the fact that my particular region of New York State wasn't settled until the 1870's and 80's. By then, California had had a permanent European settlement for over a century. Nevada's first town was 30 years old. The frontier would officially close in 1890, yet right under the nose of where America's founding had taken place, there remained sizable swaths of Adirondack wilderness that had been passed over for generations by even the most desperate settlers. Notably, even the Algonquin and Haudenosaunee Indians had no permanent presence in the Adirondacks. In fact, the word "Adirondack" is an English bastardization of the Haudenosaunee term "Ha-De-Ron-Dah," meaning "eaters of bark" -- a grim joke made at the expense of the few natives foolish enough to winter here. They routinely returned to the valleys telling tales of eating pine bark to survive the grueling winters. The soil cannot be farmed because it is egregiously acidic and intensely rocky. Logistics are extremely difficult owing to gigantic bogs, swamps, flooding streams, and mountain ranges -- making mining and logging wildly challenging. The blackflies and mosquitoes can choke you, the winters are 6+ months with lows down to -35f and periods of multi-day whiteouts. The game is thin and often ragged. We've gotten sub-freezing lows every month of the year. By 1880, when my town was founded, San Francisco already had 230,000 residents and the Transcontinental railroad had been completed for 11 years, with daily service from NYC to SF. Yet we are only ~120 miles from Albany, which was founded in 1614, some 266 years before my town was settled. Attached is a map of the extent of settlement by 1890: notice the big hole in northern NY State. That's where I live. I call it "The Wild, Wild East."
