One of my friends just bought a Tesla. He’s laughing at me today. I’ll be eating tuna and apples for the next several weeks.

NBC News is reporting this story: GenZers aren't necessarily trading alcohol for social media and drugs, they're going to the gym instead. I recently spoke to a high school student who told he quit drinking because he wants to look fit. He now works out out 6 days a week.

Lord, have mercy! I knew Rick Hogaboam. This is so sad. He was one of the kindest men I've ever met. Great man, enduring faith in the Lord.

@scottlangford22 I'm not denying social media but, my goodness, there's so much else going on in GenZ culture: gyms, coffee shops, mocktail bars, late-night cafés, gaming (video and board game), etc. I know a group of GenZers in town here that get together once a week for movie night, etc.

I’ve heard people say that it’s bad that young adults are not drinking. Late 19-year-old University of Michigan student Lucas Mattson was drunk when he passed out and froze to death in frigid January temperatures, a Michigan Medicine autopsy report on March 17 confirmed.

@drantbradley Who is saying that its bad that young adults aren't drinking? Genuine question, Im curious what is the basis of that thinking.

@j_hudson177 That logic makes no sense. I guess churches then should also reach kids outside the church be putting Bible verses on marijuana joints and handing them out to "meet then where they are."

@drantbradley I love that idea, in theory. But maybe some kids inside the church will still have social media, and kids outside the church definitely have it, so let’s meet them where they are. Let’s fill their algorithm with positive Christian messaging so that secular views don’t dominate.

This pastor rightly says that parents should not be giving their children social media accounts, yet the church has social media accounts for their student ministries. Don’t pastors, churches, and parents see the inconsistencies? A is bad for kids but we’ll provide A for kids.

@4GDadKevin You don't need a "student ministries" account to inform parents. A church can just put on the regular church page, if needed.

@drantbradley I think this also addresses the point of what the social media accounts SHOULD be used for. Not to engage students but to inform parents. IG is best used to provide information or updates. It doesnt have to target kids.

One other thing, "dry pledging" is growing in Greek life. Freshmen declare on day one. I've interviewed a number for fraternity chapter presidents that don't drink at all. Also, for guys they substituting fitness for drinking. Why are people assuming it's social media? nbcpalmsprings.com/2026/03/04/gen…

@drantbradley If they are substituting toward social media, which cause poorer mental health, and even suicide, maybe not.

That fact that people don't know what's happening in the NA world shows just how out-of-touch people are when GenZers; and the lack of imagination by older generations who can't seem to conceptualize what it means to hang out without alcohol. I was at bar near in Eugene, OR recently and nearly 1/3 of bar was NA spirits and NA beer. GenZer's going to bars and ordering NA drinks won't be including in the data. It's unfortunate.

@scottlangford22 Like I said, more and more NA options are opening, including parties. The NA industry is bombing. People are still hanging out, they just aren't drinking. It's such a weird assumption that alcohol means "community." Read this (NA is the trend for Gen Z). crainsgrandrapids.com/news/restauran…

It’s not worse than students dying. He’d sill be alive. The Alabama student in Spain would still be alive. Roughly half to three-quarters of college sexual assaults are connected to alcohol use. More and more NA bars are opening across the country. It’s not the alcohol that’s necessary. Dozens of fraternity guys would be alive if it weren’t for alcohol.

@drantbradley Their point is that it may point to a larger, perhaps worse problem, lack of social capital, which may have worse outcomes.

@drantbradley Yep. Called our church out for the same thing. Boys never knew about youth events because they were announced on IG and they don't have social media. Pastor preaching against social media. "Church" has been hijacked by folks trying to be cool.

@drantbradley I remember reading an article from @JonHaidt in 2021 on “The Dangerous Experiment on Teen Girls” about the damage that social media causes to adolescents and shut down our student ministry IG account as a result. I just couldn’t keep it going knowing what I knew.
